Leith Whaling Station - South Georgia Island (~2700 scans)

Post by dan_mccurdy » Thu Nov 26, 2015 12:22 am

Hi all

Thought I would share with you one of the recent projects we've been working on - scanning the historic whaling stations of South Georgia Island, in the South Atlantic (just above Antarctica). This video is of Leith Harbour, which is the largest of the whaling stations, and operated from 1909-1965. We have scanned all 6 whaling stations on the island, over three seasons. I will pop some videos of the other 5 as soon as I can.

Leith Harbour is practically a small town, although now totally deserted. Like the rest of the stations it is full of asbestos and flying debris, so we had to wear asbestos gear at all times over the month and a half it took us to survey. We scanned it with a Leica C10 (for the long range stuff) and a Faro x120 for the close range stuff. One side effect of this is the snow recorded by the C10 is green due to the weird camera, and the Focus data has much more realistic white snow. Entire station was registered cloud to cloud, with some magnetic targets in select locations.

Entire dataset for Leith is about 2700 scans.

Note - the video looks awful when viewed in this window - so best to view it in youTube !

EDIT - Here's two videos showing the internal structure of some of the buildings at Leith. Figured I might as well add it to this post, rather than make a new one. In these close up videos you can see some of the limitations of scanning in sometimes near blizzard conditions - with the scan point quality dropping in some areas, but we are very pleased with the results given the conditions we had to work in.

Wow  This is amazing...all the color scans in such a harsh environment. Great job Dan, I am in a state of total admiration with the will power it must have taken to complete this project. Your team has guts :P

Nice video too...I like how relevant locations were labeled. It would be even better if I could click the labels and it would go to a video of each location so I could explore them. I don't even know if that is possible with YouTube, but I can't wait to see more either way.

Ooooh ... that's a neat idea ! That is probably possible to do. We have a series of videos that pull apart certain individual buildings, so I might try that. Should be doable with clickable link boxes. Time to have a little bit of a play ...

Absolutely amazing!

I'm surprised the colors of the two scanners even match as well as they do, did you do anything additional to the colors?

Very impressive, I can completely understand why there are 2700 scans. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent work - unless you have used a scanner i dont think people will appreciate the time, effort and the processing done for this.

What sort of spec of PC were you using for this?

Wow, incredible. I'd also like info on what kind of hardware it took to pull this off!

Looks like the setting for an 'Uncharted' or 'Tomb Raider' video-game perhaps! Thanks for sharing - this is great.

:P That's a great Idea, just need to find an army of 3D modeling gurus to take on the challenge. Two requirements...must have zombies and rocket launchers
