IAFSM New Section!

Post by 3DForensics » Thu May 07, 2015 1:25 am

Very big thanks to Jason and Phil for setting up our own IAFSM section on the Forum. I guess we can start posting our own announcements and information on what's going on here!

So, first business...all IAFSM members, please chime in!

It's great to see IAFSM branching out into the user supported community. Long overdue and much appreciated.

Awesome, I glad to see IAFSM getting a boost from this group :D I am looking forward to seeing you guys at the conference this year. I hope we can pull in more attendees this year to learn more about what the forensics industry is doing with scanning and how their work can have a positive impact on other industries.

+1 for Jason & Phil.... :)

Eugene, are you going to post joining info & benefits etc of the IAFSM?

San Diego sounds interesting as well as warmer than the UK in November.

Sure thing!

First a bit of background...

The IAFSM is an organization that brings together people involved with 3D technologies in crime, collision reconstruction, security and other forensic disciplines. Our goal is to advance the use of 3D technologies and provide a forum for learning, networking and sharing of ideas, workflows and sometimes, just good stories :)

Our members range from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States, UK, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Austria and even Curacao! If you were at the conference last year, you would have quickly realized how international it was. The majority of members are from law enforcement, but we have forensic institutes, educational institutions and several private companies.

The cost is $50 US for public agency members and $150 for private members.

So, what are the benefits?

Webinars - We host about 4 webinars a year on hardware, software, technology or specific applications.

Conferences- Previously we used to have a track at SPAR, but we decided to have our own conference and continue to support SPAR at the same time. This year, we are in San Diego in November and aside from the waterfront location, we are pretty serious about the content.

Workshops and Demos - We will be continuing to hold workshops and live demos at our conferences and occasionally at other conferences as well. For example, I will be hosting a conference at the Toronto Police Training Conference next week, the IABPA (Bloodstain Pattern Analysis) conference in Forth worth and we have a bomb/arson demo as part of our next conference which is being hosted by the San Diego County Seriff's Office.

Newsletters - We try to bring together the most relevant information from around the world on 3D technologies and also try to bring new content to our members.

Papers - Although we don't have a technical journal, we have published the results of our workshops and demos so that others might benefit from having this data.

Best Practices Guidelines - This seems to be a "forever" document, but it is something that we are still working on. If you are interested in what are the best practices for laser scanning, we have a lot of good input from our members.

Networking - As a member you have access to our member list and one of the biggest benefits is being able to bounce ideas or ask questions of some of our more experienced members.

Need a Like button! :D

Thanks to Jason and Phil for enabling this section. Most of the webinars are members only, plus members have a special rate at conference. Last year's event was superb - and to give a good example of cross discipline work I leaned a lot from Jonathan Coco, sat as I was next to him! (His view may be totally different!!) Our conversations really covered a lot of the disciplines and how elements and practice are common within forensics and the wider arena.

http://www.iafsm.org for details on membership and conference 2015, you know it makes sense!

Awesome Bill! Keep an eye out for the upcoming Riegl webinar and please consider our conference in November. If you have any interesting educational material to present, we would ask you consider making a presentation.
