Unwrapping hyperboloid pointcloud shape with colour

Post by Ioannis »

Hello, I have a pointcloud chimney in a shape like a hyperboloid how its possible to unwrapping it with colour?
Pointcab has only unwrapping of cylinder shapes not hyperboloid or cones.
The shape is similar to the attached.
Waiting for your help.

you can try best fitting 2 cones with cloudcompare, split the chimney at an exact elevation in 2 pointcloud and use the exact radius for both projections you generate. You can then export those projection afterwards and overlap them in autocad to get a full picture.

Btw You need to identify the dimensions/radius with meter units in autocad and use those values in Cloudcompare

Someone might have a better idea for your curved shape. You will get some distortion in the unwrapping if its not a perfect fit.

Mind the shape is not a cone. It's probably an hyperboloid.

I vaguely remember using the "Surface of Revolution" function to "unroll" the interior surface of Crushing mills back when I was doing that sort of work.

https://www.cloudcompare.org/doc/wiki/i ... s_(plugin)

Perhaps that would work ? You could draw the profile from a cross section of your scan.

SCC can unwrap relative to one or more arbitrary shapes (section templates) extruded along an arbitrary polyline (alignment). The section templates can also be cut from the point cloud at specified intervals to get an accurate unwrap. There's a sample video below from 2018 and the functionality has been significantly enhanced over the last couple of years.

To use this on a hyperboloid, you'd first have figure out how you wanted the surface developed / unwrapped. Easiest would be a circular alignment and hyperbolic sections as the reference surface for unwrapping.

As you can see there are a few ways to do it also you can search the forum as there is a routine called unfurl which I have used.

But the bigger question is what type of projection do you clients request. ie which dimensions do you wish to be correct.

Client want a perfect unwrap model with colour in order to view the damage of Chimney and calculate quantities for repair.
Programs that i had so far is Cylone full, pointcab and cloud compare.
