Matlab Point Cloud plugin

Post by Steve_Euclideon »

We have been playing around with our Euclideon Vault SDK inside Matlab as a way to view massive 3D Point Clouds - similar to what we've previously done for the Unity platform.

My question to this forum is whether anyone has a need for such a thing, and if so what specific features would you want?

We can render our Unlimited Detail models inside Matlab using CPU only, rotate the model but what else?

- specify camera position?
- would you want geospatial support? what geo-zones? local grid?
- select a point to see meta-data?
- select and area?
- export an area to Point Cloud / LAS?
- Anything else?

I assume currently people are using Matlab for Point Cloud processing, transformation, classification, ML, etc. and exporting the data into other packages for viewing. Would it be useful to view the point cloud instantly inside Matlab?

People still use Matlab? :-) I'm only half joking, I would have thought other languages would be more popular for those types of applications. Python certainly seems to dominate the ML world at least.

I know it's pretty entrenched in some industries, but I'm not to sad that I haven't needed to touch Matlab since grad school.

Yeah, I also haven't used Matlab since University, however we have a number of customers (large corporations) that continue to tell us how they use Matlab in their prototyping workflows. We've released a Python sample

https://github.com/Euclideon/vaultsdksa ... es/python3
as part of our overall integrations

But you've raised another interesting question: What other programming language / scripting platforms are people using these days with their Point Clouds?

FME?

That makes sense (Matlab for prototyping) for people focusing on pure math it's a pretty direct representation of that. Once they've got something working you can always give it to the engineers to convert to a more general language for production.

Ours is a pretty niche use case, but since nobody else is replying, here's one we would probably play with if it was available:

All C++ here with a bit of HLSL for GPU compute stuff (really need to get my head around Vulcan). I use a bit of Python occasionally for fun and learning but not for anything commercial as yet.
