i7 or Xeon

Post by thornx »

Hi everyone. Looking at upgrading some old i5-4590/8GB/P620 machines that keep crashing while working with Autocad 3D drawings.

Thinking of either:

Z2 Mini G3 - i7-7700 3.5Ghz/8GB/M620m

or

Thinkstation P330 - Xeon E-2224G 3.5Ghz/8GB/P620

These machines will be mainly used for Autocad 2D and 3D work.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!!

i7 will give you a better price performance ratio but from a reliability perspective, Xeon every time for me. That said, for any new workstations I'm going AMD Threadripper these days and haven't seen any reliability issues. Main things for a reliable PC are good quality components throughout, especially PSU, well thought out cooling and no overclocking.

Edit: just looking at your spec, 8GB is also too small for RAM. I'd go 16gb minimum.

Thanks for the insight Shane.
Yes, both are pre-built machines (I don't have time to build custom machines anymore) - first thing I was planning to do is double the memory in whichever machines we go with. The xeon is a lenovo thinkstation, so should be top quality components.

I'm currently doing a 5 level apartment building with about 20 rooms per floor, and a large roof plant

using as much AutoCAD smarts as possible (been at this for 20yrs) xrefs, dynamic blocks, automatic data extraction, own pallets and lisps etc..

Doing this on a machine with a year old i7, 16gb ram and a 1050GTX, 2x512gb SSDs, Win10 Pro, cloud located files and multiple other programs running, outlook excel, Bluebeam PDF etc.....

only problem i get is the ram is a bit low at 16gb I,m actually going to upgrade it to 32

same machine handles big Revit drawings really well...so..

16gb will be fine unless your really loading up lot of data..

decided to order both a xeon 4 core running at 3.8Ghz, and an i5 6 core running at 4.0Ghz.
Both with 16GB RAM, and a quadro P620 & P600 respectively.....

I'll let you know which fares better....
