Point Cloud to Point Cloud Comparison

Post by jhermany »

Hello Everyone,

I looking to see if anyone can suggest a software program that can compare two point clouds against one another. The task at hand is to determine if a building I scanned previously is moving. It is in need of future repairs and the owner wants to monitor it's condition. My plan was to scan it again, use the same survey control and then compare the point clouds to see if it has shifted. My backup plan is to use Trimble Realworks and cut cross sections through the two clouds to determine if there are any differences.

Thank you.
Jared

I use Polyworks for this and it works perfectly. Others I think use cloudcompare but I have not used it.

I Believe cloud compare (free) has the ability to compare 2 point clouds, and show the deviations.

Also GOM Inspect (there's a free version). It's relatively easy to use if you follow the manual; I personally prefer it over CloudCompare for cloud/cloud comparison, as it is specialized software and can generate nice-looking reports.

If you are already using Trimble RealWorks then you would probably want to use the 3D Inspection tool which is made specifically for these type of applications. It is available in all editions except Base.
