Creating Models from Pointclouds using Artificial Intelligence.

Post by dineshkimraj »

Good day all, I know that it is possible to automatically generate pipes from the point clouds using Edgewise. Is there any way of generating entire models using Artificial Intelligence? Had a prospective client mention that they may be pursuing this option.

Ah, the magical "Make Model " button !
I certainly hope it is a long way off, or I am out of a job :)
Regards,
Mike.

It is happening - nothing overly commercial yet.

Stamford have a classification system they were working on at least 3 or 4 years ago.

A mate of mine at SiteSee is doing it for telecommunication towers with antenna modelling etc.

Few years away - but assume it will happen.

From what I understand, SiteSee was only doing classification using images and was not building 3D models. This was a few years back though so I could be wrong.

They use images and point cloud in the segmentation - full 3D etc. Various videos online that gives a hint at what is happening under the covers. Images also feed in to the rust analysis and are used in the overall user experience.

At a guess this is not far off at all but whether the computational cost will be worth the result is something else again. Finding known discrete objects in a large point cloud can be done using a CNN with decent training data. If you have 3DS or BIM models representing your object you can probably build artificial training data. Thing is that the processing time and cost could well be prohibitive where a large number of potential objects are involved. So something like pylons could be easy where you might be searching for a handful of possible known types and have models to compare them against. All man made objects over a certain size inside a room is a rather different proposition, Florent Poux's work is worth reading on this.

This is interesting, most of our clients are in the oil and gas industry. So the models we usually deliver to them are whole offshore platforms or onshore facilities. So using AI to model this might be a bit of a stretch.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) will not happen until we perfect HI (Human Intelligence). And we are a very long way off on HI at the moment.

The idea that we, the same beings that are f£*$ing this world to pieces can make a machine that is clever is so insane! its enough to make anyone cry.
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Sorry, I just had to come back to this because AI can't solve anything. We need to get up of our arses and do it ourselves or we will all die.
