RTC360 b/w scans very dark

Post by wgfletch »

I was not able to find anything on here with a search but hopefully this has been covered and it is just something on my end

When scanning b/w with our RTC360 the data and images(realviews)/points are WAY to dark...to the point where its impossible to tell what things are and what you are looking at

compared to our Faro unit which generates fantastic intensity images and points

Is this something on my end?!!?

The only thing i have tried in REG360 is to mess with the gamma rendering i think its called? This brightened everything in reg360 but did not effect the export

yes I'm on the latest RTC firmware and REG360 version

updated with image...scans are right next to each other both done B/W

and just for everyone's reference, these were registered in register360 together...there are some MUCH worse then this...this is exterior with fairly light colors for the black surfaces (which are really the problem) the post in the image is a darker color....cant really see it at all in the RTC360 shot but you can see it REALLY well in the M70 shot

Here is the RTC360 Scan within REG360...

so this would make it seem as if there is an issue with REG360 to recap....

can anyone from Leica chime in on this?

I've noticed the same 'dark' greyscale scans from our RTC. I find that tweaking the Gamma Correction in Cyclone makes the data look fine (0.4ish), but I can see this being a pain if using more than the RTC360 data on a project.

Apart from manipulating the intensity values of an RTC360 scan to match the approximate intensity distribution of a different make/model of scanner, I don't see an easy way to treat groupings of scans as having different gamma corrections.

I don't think it is a bug, just the way software handle displaying the RTC's particular distribution of intensity values.

I messed with the gamma correction in REG360 with no change to the export....so maybe that is step one from Leica if they can get those changes to actually "stick"

very disappointed in this though..anyone who is interested in jumping ship from Faro and does a lot of work through recap should really look at this thread because it makes certain environments very difficult if not impossible to model well from

this really really surprises me that everyone apparently (I'm assuming) just has excepted this? so many of these shots in certain conditions just are basically all black and useless...for a unit that is 80-90k I don't see how this is not being talked about

I think you are missing the point here. the intensity is a hard, but relatively arbitrary value attached to each data point. It is not an issue with the data missing, only the way the user (you) has chosen to display it within Recap/Revit.

The data is there, and it is most likely fine, it is only the way Recap is showing the data.

The data is scaled to fit a greyscale band of colors, because the range of arbitrary intensity values is different between Faro and Leica, they will have a different range of possible intensity values.

So the Max and Min intensity values of the RTC are likely larger than a Faro's, which is likely why the range of darker colors is more present in the RTC data.

From Autodesk:
Intensity - using a gradation of color between 2 (B&W by default) colors (Max Intensity and Min Intensity from the raw data scan) that you specify.

You can change the recap point cloud intensity colors In Revit, so instead BLACK AND WHITE, IT IS GREY (red, blue, green, etc) and WHITE (pink, yellow, purple, etc), your choice. This helps highlight the cloud against a very white/black colored Revit Model.

Change your display type so you are not viewing intensity values in black and white. Changing your background color/gradient helps.
