Positioning Laser Scanner Sideways

Post by DennisNguyen » Wed Nov 06, 2019 10:14 pm

Hi, I am a beginner to this technology, so please be...

This is my first time of mounting the scanner sideways and upside down, and I'm not sure how this works. Would someone please share your experience with me? What do I have to set on the scanner? and how do i register with different positions of point clouds? (upside down scans, sideways scans, and top scans)
Thank you in advance!
Dennis

First off, welcome.

Let's start with the obvious: be VERY VERY careful and methodical when scanning sideways or upside down. One small mistake or untightened screw and you could be making a very expensive (and potentially dangerous) mistake.

In terms of registering, it depends on what software you are using to register.

Most software packages read the scans as 'levelled', especially when scanning with the inclinometer activated.

You could either deactivate the inclinometer (don't forget to reactivate it once your sideways or upside down scan is finished), or in your registration software there should be an option to make that scan unlevel of you scanned with inclinometer active.

Also, make sure you have the necessary overlap (if registering cloud to cloud) or that you have enough targets if registering using targets.

Here are some previous LSF threads concerning upside down scanning:

Most scanners are quite robust (FAROs certainly are). I've kept mine upright, but others do it routinely (upside down/sideways), so it can be done. Good luck!

Thank you for the tips, Matthews and Scott!
To clearly understood from your advice, this is what I have to do:
1) Deactivate the inclinometer when scanning sideways or upside down.
2) I use Scene for registration: Is there any special method of registration. Do I have to rotate the unleveled scans (sideways and upside down scans) or the software will automatically level the point clouds?

You don't have to disable the inclinometer for upside-down scanning. Only sideways or significant tilt scans.
