Hi all,
I use Rhino 3D as my main modeling package, it can handle quite large poinclouds in full colour/ intensity if you import the cloud as an E57 file. Point cloud management is the key here, why do to want to load a whole18 gig file if you only need to model a room or a truck sized object ? Chop your point cloud up into useable sized chunks. I also use the Veesus plugin for Rhino, it is an excellent product as it allows editing, slicing, sectioning etc within Rhino and also vastly increases it's point cloud handing capability if you want to use huge point clouds.
It's main advantage for me is that it enables Rhino to render point clouds, something standard Rhino can't do.
I haven't used visualarq yet, but I have some friends who rate it very highly.
Rhino, Veesus and Visualarq are all significantly cheaper than their Autodesk equivalent products that also require Recap, Jet stream, Cloudworx etc.
Cheers.
Mike.

+100 on Arena4D being a fantastic piece of software. I use data studio and the rhino plugin on a daily basis. If you need to reverse engineer there is no better bang for the buck than the plugin.

So just a tidbit for all you Rhino users - open your cloud in cloudcompare and save as binary PLY. Then import into rhino and enjoy small file sizes and full color rendering.

Great tip...will try that. You mean the native point cloud import in Rhino, correct?

I can't do screenshots...

But yes, any raw scan that you can get into CC save as PLY.

Choose binary for file size goodness.

It imports into rhino as a cloud, but retains color in every shading mode.

We've just pushed out a minor update to Arena4D, but relates well to this thread..

We have a customer who does a lot with VisualArq and Arena4D and said it would be nice if we could get our slice tool to also slice the Rhino Geometry at the same time.. wish granted.

The slice objects now have a "Native" check box which allows you to specify whether the slice should also slice through Rhino native objects or not.

Cheers

Mark

That's an awesome feature Mark! I can see how that can help on visual inspections and even simple visualization.

Not quit sure if Rhino would be an ideal software for scan to BIM. Most of BIM users are Architects and contractors and they are fluent either in Revit and/or CAD. In case of as built modeling in Revit you barely need any additional software. Insert Recap and you are good to go.

I'm dreaming of a Rhino Cloudworx app. Fat chance though...
