I prefer to see a unit in action live.

You might want to re-check your spec sheets on the RTC ..

Range accuracy is listed as 0.4 mm @ 10 m, 0.5 mm @ 20 m.

The 2.9 mm @ 20 m is talking 3D point accuracy.

Get a demo and grab the data for the RTC .. it will be worth your while. The VIS is pretty damn awesome.
I dont understand if we mean the same thing.

From the spec sheet on the website:

Accuracy* Angular accuracy 18”
Range accuracy 1.0 mm + 10 ppm
3D point accuracy
1.9 mm @ 10 m
2.9 mm @ 20 m
5.3 mm @ 40 m

Range noise***
0.4 mm @ 10 m, 0.5 mm @ 20 m

Ill look into it further, but i fail to see where they promise a 0,5mm @ 20m accuracy :?
(I only see they promise clean looking scans with very little noise)
Sincerely, Robin van der Molen

They don't promise this .. but neither do they say 2.9mm at 20m is the range accuracy.

Range accuracy is talking about the laser measuring distance only .. the 3D accuracy is talking about overall system accuracy including the IMU (one would think - more below!) and the horizontal and vertical encoders .. so "slope accuracy" maybe if you want to think of it like that .. X,Y and Z.

The faro 120 spec sheet I saw stated "± 2mm ranging error3 at 25 m" .. this is not the 3d position accuracy - just the laser's ability to measure distance.

But the same spec sheet for the RTC states the IMU is good to 3' of arc .. which at 20m is more than 2.9mm .. so who knows. Got to love spec sheets.

Back to the Photon .. Inclination sensor is apparently good to Accuracy 0.02°; Resolution 0.001°.. which basically you need to add to your 2mm range error to get to the equivalent 3D accuracy figure for the RTC. They don't make it easy.

The RTC laser is 1mm basically .. half the Photon .. but the IMU in the RTC is supposedly worse than the Photon .. call it even ;-p

Back to the Photon ..
Touché

Thanks for elaborating the explaination, getting a bit dizzy at reading all the different usercases i find online. I guess im getting sloppy with my understanding of them all.

It seems like spec sheets are indeed made to be as vague as possible :P

Anyhow, it still did peek my interest! Its on the list anyways :)

Thanks again :D

[Edit]

... Ouch.. i just found it's price, it's double of my original budget. I do not think any for of persuasion can help me get to that level.

[Edit 2]

Z+F 1516 is in the same price region (advertised at €78,5K )

That points me more towards a Faro S150/S70 now, unless i missed a suggestion.
I tend to lean towards the S70 basicly because of the pricepoint.
(At the end, that is my most limiting factor because of higher up. And I really want to try to keep 3D scanning in our company's portfolio, I think old hardware is to blame it currently isn't profitable to scan.)
Sincerely, Robin van der Molen

My 2¢(s):
Might want to read some of the footnotes, otherwise known as fine-print...
Frequently the value given is the 1 sigma value, not the more encompassing 3 sigma :!:

Grab yourself a demo of the RTC360. The data is as clean as the Leica P40, It's fast, it's relatively cheap, it's got great imaging, it's small, it registers data automatically.

It's the best scanner for the money today. And you won't look back.

Unfortunately both are way above (double) budget :P ;)

Unless all planets in the universe allign, and with a scanner of that price reducing the workflow (for example, a 100 scans job) to just two days then i'm able to persuade my higher ups

Thank you both for the input tough! :D
They do indeed both look really good feature-wise and storys i read on this forum indeed make them appear really good machines :)

I'd say about equally good :)

In that case. If you are already using Faro software, then go with the M70. The RTC is relatively cheap for what it does, but the Leica software is a budget killer for sure.
