Faro Focus X330 cameo in the Mummy 2017

Post by jcoco3 » Wed Oct 11, 2017 1:29 pm

Not sure if I am late to this discussion, but last weekend I finally watched the new Mummy movie on Amazon Prime. I was surprised to see a Faro X330 used like a movie prop to supposedly scan the tomb of the mummy...although I am not sure how the average audience member would even know what the device is and what it is doing since they never turn it on or show any point clouds like in other movies. Is the average audience member supposed to know that these days?

Anyway, if you want to waste some time, have a look:

[Spoiler Alert] they start shooting wildly at spiders, then a clumsy Tom Cruise knocks the scanner over  Maybe he will stop by our office so we can give some lessons on scanning

Man, the acting in that clip was painful. Pretty cool to see that in a big Hollywood movie though! My guess is that they have a deleted scene or at least a little removed dialogue that explains what it is to the average viewer.

I agree with everything you just said  Especially the part about painful acting...it is insulting for anyone with a handful of brain cells, but then again many people don't even have two brain cells to rub together. Know your audience...

For anyone who cant sit through that gruelling display of acting, the cameo appearance is around about the 6minute mark ;-)

He wasn't even wearing a hard hat!

I was hoping a bit of the Tom Cruise magic would not only make laser scanning more cool, but give a bit of 'street cred' to PPE!

Perhaps it's just another case of brand recognition - it's a 'Pharaoh' scanner, after all, the blue, Lapis Lazuli special edition X330...

He knocked over a scanner and was worried about spiders! I would have been grabbing onto the scanner for my life!

Hi Jonathan.

Thanks a lot for posting this here!

While having the scanner present in cinemas all over the world is pretty cool, the movie companies had been very restrictive and did not allow FARO using any footage. So we could not publish any detail ourselves, not even the scene you are linking to.

Not sure though, if that acting has created any apetite to see the rest of the movie...

Best regards,
Oliver

Your welcome...I guess any publicity is good publicity :) It just seems like a wasteful use of the device and a missed oppourtunity in my opinion.

Like Skyler, I keep thinking that there must be a deleted scene. I imagine a scene where a bunch of archaeologist/scientist are huddled around some new 3D display spinning the point cloud around and zooming in using hand gestures as in the movie Minority Report. At least then the viewer would have a clue what that tripod and blue box were all about. You know...I might actually pay more to see that deleted scene than the rest of the movie as at a minimum somebody would have had to come up with a creative new way to show and interact with the data. The tech in Minority Report may have been ahead of the actual technology and probably helped to inspire someone to create similar devices we use today.

If it keeps going like this, the next thing we might see is an actor juggling BLK 360s, then dropping them on the ground smashing them into pieces
