Which Software for 3D Modelling from Point Cloud?

Post by denbig » Mon Oct 02, 2017 1:34 pm

Hi everyone,

It's been a while! Hope you are all well!

I am trying to find out about creating 3D Models form Scan Point Clouds. What software are people using ?

This has probably been asked before, but I'm thinking of buying at the moment and want some up-to-date info if possible please...and I hope I don't start an online debate with this question - or maybe I do, hmmmmmmm!!!

I have been looking at things like Autocad Plant 3D and similar....but I don't really know if that is best. I do a fair bit of industrial scanning, but am doing some heritage and construction work also.....so it's a bit of a mixed bag really - maybe there is no "one size fits all" solution out there, but I am hoping to boil it down as much as I can through this (rather brilliant) forum.

Thanks in advance for any and all help offered,

Denis.

PS : I'm using Faro Focus 120 Scanner (getting old now I guess!) and Faro Scene 6 Software along with Autodesk Autocad / Inventor / ReCap360

Ok.. I'll bite :-)
My two main tools are Arena for Rhino and Pointcab.

I usually export pointcab images and send to customers willing to do the modeling in house. I seldom find customers able or willing to handle a pointcloud.

When I have to do the modeling in house Rhino and the Arena plugin is the way to go. The combination with the arena plugin is awesome. I have yet to find a point limit, it's fast and intuitive. Moreover the abritrary section is a productivity boost.

Under Rhino you can do contruction modeling also using Visularq and export IFC models.
There is a Rhino piping in case of industrial environments but I havent' tested it.

I tried to use the pointcloud under the autodesk tools, but I personally like Rhino much more.

I know it's time consuming, but test any candidate in real world applications. The test cases might not be representative of your needs/workflow.

Hi,
My feedback on this topic is that it really depends on what you want to model. Some SW will do great for modeling plants and others will be more dedicated to heritage or construction...

There have been some interesting developments in the retopology field for point clouds:

For raw meshes from point clouds we've had good luck using FARO Scene and Thinkbox Sequoia:
