I meant about $80K Aussie, ($60K USD ) I think your scanner is about $140K (Aussie) on the same scale.
I have used Riegl scanners a lot for mining work,(Training mining surveyors) I was the first person to test a VZ-1000 in the field in Australia

All my photos :) .. Riegl VZ series are great scanners.

I think a rtc360 is about 60k € here so 2/3 of a riegl but a much more versitale instrument imho. But it all is workflow. If you're happy with your Faro, Leica's, Topcons,... you should stay with it. Even if there is faster stuff around.

A mobile mapper is faster then myself an a riegl but i don't care. Much of the time spent on a job is travel time and a mobile mapper doesn't change that so a few hours more on site doenst' bother me. I always count job in days, not hours.

The RTC is brilliant for measured building surveys, fits in a lot of places and its quickest scan is just over 30 seconds. The integrated camera is not too bad for an additional 60 seconds but it wont match the Riegl external DSLR. But i am pretty sure the RTC will be about the half price before any additional maintenance/warranty etc.

What are you guys going to be scanning? As if its larger sites, more accuracy required and longer range etc all of which the BLK isnt any use at, the P40 maybe a better solution than the RTC360 and they aint a huge amount more money!
So far I have demo'd the RTC360, Trimble x7, and the Faro S Plus 150 and in my opinion the RTC360 has been the fastest as well as produced the best scan results. We do a lot of scanning in food manufacturing facility's where we act as a design/build contractor fabricating equipment and performing integrations. Primarily we only scan a few rooms within the plant (basically the project area) and our workflow doesn't consist of scanning full buildings.

Workflow currently consists of scanning --> field/register360 --> Leica Cloudworx for Solidworks. Most of our design work primarily goes through Solidworks due to the amount of sheet metal and weldments that we work with. It is great to have this functionality as Solidworks is terrible at using point cloud data without the help of Cloudworx. Exploring these other vendors, their workflows primarily go through Revit/CAD which is not what we can work with on my end.

If anyone else has a Solidworks workflow, I would love to hear about it!

Hi,

How was RTC360 scan result better than Faro S150 Plus scan result, in your opinion?
Best Regards,

Contact me Fosser2...i also just sent you an email:) I've got over 10 years of experience using a FARO equipment. Worked in one of the largest GC in WI doing laser scanning in the field for 7 years, now I've been here at the best company out there FARO, helping other AEC companies get into scanning for over 4 years. We can beat all the scanner prices with our S series I'll bet on that, and we are by far now the fastest scanner on the market with Swift stop and go scanning now. Plus you get an experienced Account Manager with over a decade of hands on experience to get you up and running quickly. Let's talk and i guarantee you'll be looking back on Leica from here on out. Not to add what's coming out this year....stay tuned.

I think you have just sold yourself the RTC360.

Get the back pack with it and you are sorted for walking in to the factory.

And if you are using Solidworks with a Cloudworx plugin , even if buy a better non leica scanner it does not improve your work flow!

BTW the Trimble X7 is nice, I had a demo but we already had P40 and Cyclone Core so there was nothing that could sell us it over RTC360 even though it as product was cheaper. Slower scan time and needed a tablet the entire time.

I'm in the same point as u...

My next step is to buy a Lidar scanner for cultural heritage stuff (i have a really small company), and i'm not really sure that RTC360 is "still" a good buy even with the actual prices on refurbished units... i'm a little bit worried that Leica release something new soon.

I think it is a mistake to compare the instrument you can buy to day with an imaginary better instrument that isn't available. Regardless when you buy there will always be something better in the future, albeit it might be a bit buggy on release. In my opinion the RTC360 is a great fit for cultural heritage and most other general scanning applications; light, fast and high enough density with good accuracy to pick up the fine detail you're likely to encounter in cultural heritage. If you're doing price/performance comparisons, I'd look at the Riegl that Lieven has linked, NavVis and any other options that are available locally at a good price where you can get a demo at a location of your own choice. If you're buying a refurb, look at the guarantee in detail including ongoing service costs and turn around time / temporary replacement in case of failure.

Not sure if i may discuss in this post but my last job using an RTC360 was a little bit dissapointing in terms of "texture quality" That's one of the other reasons to think about maybe test some other options.

Last year I did use Faro S70 and RTC360 for industrial scanning (big equipment and structures). I prefer RTC because is fast, good scans and photos, amazing preRegistering experience (any problem you can see and find solution on time). I was really impressed how it did accelerate our job (less time in site and fast deliver). Only issue is management of big files. So we had to upgrade our machine to deal with it (more ram and disk space/speed). RTC worth the price for sure.

I would love to see an actual dataset taken with the swift where only walking was done so no stopping for additional scans.
