RTC360 Still a Good Buy?
Our company is budgeting for a RTC360 this year as it is the next logical step for us. We have demo'd one already and we already own the necessary software, so it was easy to get up and running. We would be moving from a BLK360 (big jump, I know). What I'm trying to figure out, is if the RTC360 is still worth 80k as it stands. It was released in 2018 and has had a substantial amount of firmware upgrades made to it to make it "better".
Is the next big scanner release right around the corner or do you think we'd be good pulling the pin on something like this in 2022?

Having used most scanners in the market...if I would have to start over and buy my first big scanner...I would go for the riegl vz400i.

Re: RTC360 Still a Good Buy?
It depends a lot on what type of work you will be doing with the scanner.
I notice that you guys are a stainless steel fabrication company ?
Do what we did, organise a side by side test of whatever scanners you think that you might buy as per your budget.
Scan an object that you would typically scan for your work, test each scanner from the same scan position under the same conditions etc.
Dont let the dealers try to baffle you with their sales pitch, just go by the results, time in the field, ease of use of software, ongoing costs etc.
Every scanner has its pros and cons, everyone on this forum will have their own favourite brand and model, a lot of it is also based on workflow.
Having said that, if you are keeping your BLK360, and adding a RTC360, it would make sense to stick with Leica.

Fully costed side by side comparison for the specific workflows you're using makes a lot of sense, though as per Leiven's post, you really need to look at field to finish times (e.g. scan + registration + processing) for a typical job rather than just field time. Very easy to lose time saved on site, and much more besides, in a slow office workflow. I'd also talk to the dealer about ongoing maintenance costs, including time taken to calibrate and cost and availability of a replacement unit for any down time. Basically, try to find out all the hidden costs and potential time wasted as part of your trial.Mike Annear wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 2:36 am It depends a lot on what type of work you will be doing with the scanner.

Re: RTC360 Still a Good Buy?
Hi Guys...
I thought we were talking scanners around the $80k mark ?
So that would rule out the VZ400i ?
Above $80k range we could also include the Z&F range, Leica P series, Trimble, Topcon scanners etc.
BTW, we chose the Faro S70 in our comparison. ~ $80k ....

Re: RTC360 Still a Good Buy?
Sorry Lieven,
I meant about $80K Aussie, ($60K USD ) I think your scanner is about $140K (Aussie) on the same scale.
I have used Riegl scanners a lot for mining work,(Training mining surveyors) I was the first person to test a VZ-1000 in the field in Australia

All my photos .. Riegl VZ series are great scanners.
Regards,
Mike.

Re: RTC360 Still a Good Buy?
If your work flow is already Leica, i would upgrade to Cyclone Core if you go with another Leica scanner.
The RTC is brilliant for measured building surveys, fits in a lot of places and its quickest scan is just over 30 seconds. The integrated camera is not too bad for an additional 60 seconds but it wont match the Riegl external DSLR. But i am pretty sure the RTC will be about the half price before any additional maintenance/warranty etc.
What are you guys going to be scanning? As if its larger sites, more accuracy required and longer range etc all of which the BLK isnt any use at, the P40 maybe a better solution than the RTC360 and they aint a huge amount more money!
