No idea where to start with what I want to achieve

Post by Goatsby »

Happy New Year all.

My name is J and I am a 3D exhibition designer.

I would like to scan Conference spaces of hotels and insert my 3D model into the scan to create accurate floor plans and visuals of the booths we want
to install.

Is this possible? I use 3D studio max and Autocad.
What software and hardware would I need to do this?
I was looking at Matterport but see that there are lots of other software and hardware available.

Can anyone give me some possible workflows and vendors to try?

Thank you all :)

Hello,

In terms of 3D scanning hardware, you could look into a Leica BLK360 which offers a good compromise between speed of capture, accuracy and price for your use case.

For the software solution to do virtual staging, we had stadium and other venues use our solution www.prevu3d.com.

You can easily import and place 3D files in the scene

and even remove elements if needed
youtu.be/RqTiP5OYyxs.

Floorplans can also be easily generated using our orthophoto export tool

Hope that helps.

Hi Jay

If you're looking for a full solution (hardware and software), then you could look at the ZEB Revo RT or ZEB Horizon from GeoSLAM as both systems are able to accurately scan indoor areas quickly and efficiently. GeoSLAM Connect is the software used to process datasets captured with these scanners and is very automated. It includes a floor slices workflow which automatically generates floorplans of your scanned area from a pre-determined height of your choice, all you have to do is drag in the data and the rest is done for you. The solution also allows you to compare your scans to an existing 3D model.

Your point clouds can also be exported into many different file formats so, should you wish to use any third party software, then this is a very simple process.

If this is something that you would like to try out, we offer a 'Demo in a Box' scheme. This means that we will send you the full solution (hardware and software) for you to trial for a certain period. You will also be able to access user instructions to learn how to use the solution and access to our helpful support team should you need extra help. The link to apply for this is https://geoslam.com/demo-in-a-box/. Alternatively, we can provide a face-to-face demo with a member of our team.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me directly or email [email protected].

Kind regards
Josh

Conference spaces of hotels aren't the largest around so i would go for an Faro S70 of maybe a blk. Nothing you do is critical measurements.

In your case i would buy second-hand. Lot's of gear on sale.

No need to spend 40k+ for your needs.

Collecting the data and rendering a point cloud with some external models are the easy parts. Any number of solutions from different vendors could be used to do that and you'll get pitches from all their salesman telling you their particular solution is the best and that it's as easy as 1-2-3. Don't believe them.

My advice would be to forget about how to collect the scan data and instead work backwards from what you want your deliverable to be. Once you know that and figure out what your workflow will be to get to that deliverable it will be easy to decide on how to collect the data. In other words, get some scan data and start playing with it. The data doesn't even necessarily need to be of the same type of environment you ultimately want to model, at least to get started, so you might be able to find some publicly available samples that work. The next step would be to hire someone else to scan a conference space for you and give you the point clouds so you can work up that data. By the time you've gone through that process you'll have a much better idea of exactly what you need out of the data, whether your business model makes sense, and what you should be looking at when buying hardware.

I agree with Jed on this. A growing number of our users have been involved in capturing, modeling, and visualizing event spaces recently.

This is a playlist showcasing some of their work: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPZ_ ... pibkxkppyI A more extensive list of commercial spaces captured by our community is available on our YouTube channel.

Here's a capture of this year's Intergeo that I particularly liked.

When watching these videos, you'll notice the differences between point clouds collected by various laser scanners. It'll help you get a sense of the output each hardware delivers. If you'd like to get in touch with a specific service provider whose work you like, I'll be happy to make introductions.

And as for combining point clouds with 3D models, extracting floors plans, and animations like you see above, make sure to check out our solution: https://www.nubigon.com/
