Beginner Selecting Lidar, What to Look Out For?

Hello all,
I am working on a robot for a club in my university and we have decided that Lidar would best suit our requirement to collect data on a lava tube (dia. < 100m), i.e. a full 3D scan of the geology/formations of the structure.

Being completely new to 3D imaging of any kind, however, it has been overwhelming to navigate the minutia of Lidar hardware/software. What should look out for so that I select the best Lidar module for the job?
