Backpack for VZ400i
Hi,
Anyone use a backpack to carry a Riegl instrument up stairs for exemple?
Riegl has one but it sells at 1100€ which is a bit pricey for seldom use. Anyone with tips or uses sturdy backpacks for their scanners?

Hi, yeah, we are using the ordinary leica totalstation backpacks. the skanner fits right in, and you even get the batteries, external gnsss on the side pockets, along with a good area to place the system camera on the top pocket with foam placements so its safe and sound.
The rucksack per say is maybe not the most comfortable, but it works great for carrying the gear in a safe and watertight fashion.
I have even used a camera backpack from manfrotti, not as padded as the leica pack, but on the other hand, allot more comfortable.
and the reigle fits right in there with it.
best
Peder

Hey Lieven,
Years ago we modified a hiking backpack to carry a LMS series Riegl scanner up and over the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
It worked very well.
I will try to find some pics of the bag.

Re: Backpack for VZ400i
Never carried a Riegl scanner in a backpack, but I have put any number of other scanners and devices in backpacks and climbed a variety of structures. The heaviest was a Faro laser tracker. What I look for is a backpack with very heavy duty straps (with strong stitching at the top) that will allow the backpack to be worn on my chest like a baby. I have added additional velcro padding from camera backpacks to cushion things. Reasons for wearing it on your chest is to keep your center of gravity lower while you are leaving forward climbing steep stairs. Also, it is almost impossible to carry a scanner on your back up a ladder cage comfortably.
Considering how tall and heavy a Riegl scanner can be, I might would look for a military rucksack or see what Pelican has to offer now. Only concerns would be whether or not it would sit too high on your chest blocking your vision, and of course if the pack can handle the load.

If you want it on your back and already have a hard case, then you might also consider just adding straps to the hardcase:

Just for reference...Vantage laser tracker 13.4kg...Riegl LMS 16kg! Makes my body ache just thinking about it
If you get bored and want to read an old story about "frontpacking" up ladders: viewtopic.php?t=7109
Looking back on this, I would have done some things differently...
Good luck!

Re: Backpack for VZ400i
Thanks Jonathan,
I'll look into it. It will be mainly used to climb some stairs or a ladder against a building to have access to roofs. Not for large distances.
Straps around the hard case is difficult as a Riegl case tends to be rather large and heavy of course
A compact rucksak will do fine.

That 8134-00 is interesting. I could also use this one with my TS when i have to enter a construction pit only through a ladder.

I recognise that scanner! I think it's the one I took to Mexico to scan a disused silver mine. It's an early LMS-Z210 isn't it?Mike Annear wrote: ↑Sun Jan 16, 2022 1:45 am Hey Lieven,
