Re: Faro Scene 2021 - Performance Issues
Hello,
sorry for the delay in reply. I want to share an update with you on this topic.
So the reason why this issue occured is, that we wanted to improve the parallelization of the SCENE filtering. Unfortunately we ran into technical problems (Resource Starvation) and you will see first fixes soon in SCENE 2021.2 (this week) and a bit later in SCENE 2021.3

Re: Faro Scene 2021 - Performance Issues
Hi Marc, have you guys done testing on the Threadripper platforms for these upcoming releases or are you otherwise confident that the performance levels will be restored? 2020 performance on them is extremely capable, with 2021 being borderline unusable.

Re: Faro Scene 2021 - Performance Issues
Thanks Marc,
also wanted to share an E-Mail from Faro Customer Support yesterday:
"For information:
The slowing/freezing issue with AMD CPU with a high core number will be fixed in SCENE 2021.3.
Best regards,"
We will see how it goes. For now, we switched back to Intel Xeon Plattform. Nevertheless, processing time in 2021.1 still took two or three times as long as in 2020.
I'm excited to see the bug fixes.

Re: Faro Scene 2021 - Performance Issues
Hello,
Yes it was developed and tested on a Threadripper machine. I can't say if the performance of 2020 is completely restored but in these fixes the improvements are recognizable. Some examples:
With 2021.2 the overview map creation with our test sample was reduced by 70%. Unfortunately the hollistic fix did not make it into the 2021.2 realease. So in 2021.3 the ramaining affected functions will be improved. Current tests show e.g. a speed increase in C2C of ~ 20%.
Best regards,
Marc

Re: Faro Scene 2021 - Performance Issues
Marc,
In summary:
SCENE 2021.0(& .1 & .2 and .3) performance will be same or better as SCENE 2020 on Intel (both Xeon and non-Xeon) CPUs.
SCENE 2021.0 ( & .1 & .2, but not .3) performance is worse than SCENE 2020 on AMD processors, but will be better on 2021.3.

Yes except of the second statement at the end. It still need tests if the same levels are achieved as with version 2020 for AMD processors.SAttaya wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 6:11 pm Marc,

I processed 162 Scans on Scene last night with Intel Laptop, software is up to date. All working well for me.

The realese cycles are now ~ 6 weeks. So I estimate the next release will be ~ early October.
