iPhone 12 Pro LiDAR

Post by ARGAS »

Hi Guys,

Just watched Apple Event. What do you guys think? Is it the same as in iPad, or they did some extra touches? Interesting. :?:

Best,
Karol

Exactly my thoughts.
Of course aware client won't ask us those questions, but in general I think for small measurements like whole houses (mostly interiors) it is really nice on-the-go platform.

I think Matterport will make full use of this to push their platform for "virtual viewings" and perhaps they will push their own hardware less? It (MP Capture app) works with iPhone right now even without LIDAR, so this will be an interesting time...

I have some thoughts on how we can use this in conjunction with Cyclone FIELD 360... :ugeek:

I see a big opportunity for us to go back to sites and correct the poor 'surveys' done by people with phones who now think they're surveyors.

I used the Structure Sensor v1 which was an iPad attachment for realtime scanning, but it had a very limited use case...it could do little more than a single room in one pass. It was handy for objects though.

I'd imagine the iPad lidar to be similar to this.

Hadn't quite thought of it like that... but yeah!

https://cloud.pix4d.com/dataset/708205/ ... ebe2f95c4a - apparently this was completed with an iPad Pro... same sensor.

All iPhone 12 Pro (Max) cameras of wide, ultra-wide, telephoto, and LiDAR are facing the same parallel direction.

They are prone to SLAM errors. Compared with Google ARCore, Apple ARKit is SLAMing locally (Google ARCore is globally), saving resources.

Even MS HoloLens having 4 +1 cameras gazing different directions has somewhat serious problems of SLAM.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro's A14, ISP, multi-cameras, LiDAR, plus sensor fusion may ease the problem.

But not decisively!

Even-though, Apple is the BEST!
