scanning in a low light basement

Post by Ioannis »

Hello i want to scan with a Leica p40 a two-level basement with no lights and also client wants scans to be coloured.
What options did we have in order to add light to the camera of scanner?
I have found an old thread https://www.laserscanningforum.com/foru ... 5d6#p11678
probably a nodal nidja adapter and and an dslr camera but it is time consuming i think.

One option would be using Z+F 5016. The only scanner with integrated LED light. You can see it in this video that I made a couple years ago.

As Peyman indicated, since you have a P40, some of your alternatives might be to rent a Z+F 5016, purchase a used Z+F 5010X with a Smart Light like we have, or see if someone in Greece has a Z+F 5016 that you could partner with.

We used a Z+F 5016 for a project with the same description, total darkness no lights and limited power with targets.

There is no real suitable option for a P40 that requires lighting - unless you had some crazy off camera flashes with pocket wizards... but thats just mental.

You could as mentioned hire the Z&F but not sure how easy that is to do.

Or hire a Spheron camera with flash kit - https://www.spheron.com/products/point- ... ation.html

In the past Eugene Liscio posted a terrific led setup to achieve the same thing with a Faro.
Not sure how to find it out, but it's in the forum.

We used the scanner with an iStar-camera and some handheld LED-lights. It might not be ideal but we were not so unsatisfied with the solution in the end.

Just for history's sake, when we were using the Z+F 5006, which did not have any lights or camera, I asked Christoph Froelich, CEO of Z+F what camera should we use. He told me a Spheron. We purchased a Spheron, which we still have using a 16mm Nikon lens. I asked Gerhard Bonnet, CEO of Spheron how were we going to illuminate the scans. He came up with a calibrated LED system, which compensated for the reduction in light generated by the LEDs over time. Z+F produced the Z+F 5010C, which has a imaging system built in and the Smart Light attached LED illumination, so this removed the need of the Spheron. The Z+F 5016 now has those features integrated .

Running the risk of stating the obvious here, but why don't you just purchase/hire some battery powered LED portable lights? I wouldn't recommend using a generator in the basement, for obvious reasons, but you could run an extension cable and have it set up outside if you need powered lights. Would be the most cost effective way rather than hiring a whole new scanner that you may be unfamiliar with etc. Would it not be best to use what you already have at your disposable and are experienced with.

In the past, I have used the external camera kit on the P40 in very low light with success. If you could scatter some camping style lights around the place and then use the built in HDR setting on the 60D/70D you should be able to achieve reasonably good results relatively easily. Be prepared for 30 second exposures on the camera though, which makes the photography aspect quite time consuming - (30"x 3 (for HDR) x 6 (for full spherical coverage) and you're potentially looking at 10 minutes a setup just for photos...).

Been eyeing these off for the RTC .. just haven't gotten around to it.

If you head this way, let me know how they go!

https://lumecube.com/collections/lighting-kits

Bit harder (ie more lights) with the P40 as you have to do the full plane of the camera vs the RTC.
