Re: Faro S Plus series
I spoke to a FARO salesman today to gain some details on the “plus” models.
There is no pricing as of yet.
The plus models are only for the S150 and S350 models. This is a main board hardware change.
The plus models have the option to scan at 2Mhz, and this mode is for Indoor use only at up to 140 meters from the mirror. It was designed to speed up large indoor scan projects.
No word from FARO, as of today, that existing S series scanners can be sent in to get upgraded.
Now I can see why they decided to do a soft announcement. With this Indoor only scanning enhancement, it may be a hard sell, especially to operators who primarily scan Outdoors.
One other interesting addition is an accessory for the port on top of the scanner. It is a Status Light to add back what was removed from the S series FARO scanners. Why did they ever think removing the stratus LEDs was a good idea?
Maybe FARO can also resolve the sub-par display - impossible to see in daylight!

Re: Faro S Plus series
The pair of accessory ports have been present on the top of the S-Series unit since release, and I believe the status light accessory was publicly announced at Intergeo in 2019. It is of course possible that the accessory parts are of a new design, but I don't see a reason why this would be the case.ScottKarlins wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2020 1:51 am

Re: Faro S Plus series
Hello,
as I promised, I now have more information on the scanner. I once made a video where I explain the new features of FARO Plus Scanner and how the Extra Speed affects the applications.

Re: Faro S Plus series
Thank you so much for that video explanation and personal history. I appreciate it very much
Amazing to see those range noise numbers continuing to be minimized. Can't wait to see what a "1/2x" quality scan looks like.
Also like any good information it brings up even more questions. I wonder if there are any time reduction on the lower end of the resolution scale like 1/8th resolution? I recall that the lower end of the time scale stops seeing a reduction in time after 1/8th resolution (possibly due to the time required by the other sensors and processes), and the lower end of the quality scale options start to disappear. I might have missed this information if you mentioned it, but how far down the resolution scale is the 1/2x quality available?

Re: Faro S Plus series
Hi Jonathan,
the highest speed of 2.Mio measurement / second is only supported in resolution 1 and 1/2. This has something to do with the resolution intervals of the measurement wave, as I explained in the video.
i once made 2 test scans with 2. Mio and 1 Mio measurements per second and the results both look very good. With the eye I cannot see any differences here. Plane fit with 19 meter from the scanner are less as 1 mm. Unfortunately the pictures here in the forum are displayed worse than original in preview. Please click the picture to see it in better resolution.

Re: Faro S Plus series
That is what I anticipated after hearing your explanation on the physics, but just wanted to confirm as I admit it was a bit over my head.the highest speed of 2.Mio measurement / second is only supported in resolution 1 and 1/2. This has something to do with the resolution intervals of the measurement wave, as I explained in the video.
That 2 mio scan looks really clean compared to what I had imagined...Wow! This is kind-of game changing for many projects where we don't need the range and extra little bit of accuracy. The thought of cutting scan time roughly in half is pretty exhilarating, but I doubt we will capturing a bunch of 1/2res scans indoors where we mainly use 1/8th and 1/4res. This new feature reminds me of an old experiment we did comparing 1/2res 2x to 1/4res 4x which had the same scan times (8:04min on the 120s). It was a strange way to utilize the 1/2res scans, but it makes me want to try a bunch of 1/2res 1/2x scans then run them through the noise compression to create 1/4res scans of somewhat better quality. Much to think about I suppose
Heck of a way to clog up the Wi-Fi during on-site registration though!

Re: Faro S Plus series
Hi Johnatan,
I have the information that FARO is continuously working on the further development of the Onsite Registration. Since this is a real registration and not just a pre-registration, there are of course technical limits to be considered. Let's see what else is coming. Maybe they will approach it with other ideas / solutions.
