Looking for a sample point cloud

Post by Raymond »

Hello:

Can a kind soul point to a publicly available point cloud with some streets and buildings?

This is the situation. A while back I was donated a point cloud produced by a Leica P20 laser scanner. It is here:

http://www.dealey-plaza.org/this-govern ... /pbs-nova/

It contains 36,146,767 3D colored points.

It seems to me that the quality/resolution is lower than normal. See below the building's entrance. Does it seem normal to your experienced eyes? Compare what Revit displays vs. after rendering.

TIA,

I have a dataset of a few residential streets, with a 7-11 Gas station/school as well. Not sure if it's as detailed as you'd like, but I can pass it over to you if you'd like. PM me for more info.

Definitely looks sparse for a P20, but depends on what resolution it was scanned on and how far away the scanner was from this building

Your expert and kind assistance is much appreciated, Steve. Please watch the relevant part from the 2013 PBS Nova program below. This was supposed to be a big breakthrough. In fact, to this day what you see there is the last word, what America and the world know about this tragic, unresolved according to most case:

I had those files reviewed by a competitor of Leica Geosystems and they told me something similar: That point cloud is rather poor.

Thanks!

See below what was shown to the PBS viewers vs. what I was given.

ps: People have risked and lost their jobs to make sure that the only open source project in the history of this case, since 1964 has those measurements. The person from PBS who made sure that I got the laser scanning files, Lauren Miller, was fired, as well as another who helped me, the PBS Public Editor, Madhulika Sikka.
