Simple tool to analyze E57 files

Post by jukka.alander »

Hello,

I'm looking for as simple tool that would analyze E57 scan files quickly. Most important information would be just a number of scans in the file, also the scan names. Its not necessary to display cloud at all. Any tips?

Currently using CloudCompare, FME and ReCap in general, but these are too heavy for the simple task.

Br,
Jukka

Hi,

We are having the same problem.

The problem is that when you export several scans from cyclone to one e57 file. Cyclone gives new names for all the scans.

We have the tool you need!
The separate scan converter we did for our software, Scansap, shows the e57 information and its structure.
No need to convert.
I can send it to you.
Please let me know.

You can use the e57xmldump utility that comes with libe57 to extract all of the header info to a xml file and then read whatever you want from that.

http://www.libe57.org/data.html

Although it's more aimed at extracting the data points rather than metadata, you might also be utilize the new support for e57 that was added to PDAL in the latest release.

Hello,

Here's our e57 converter interface. We also use the e57 lib.

Alternatively, you can also show E57 meta data in CloudCompare. Yet, you cannot change entries (if I'm not mistaken). A lot of programmers simply add default values to it that can cause trouble. Click on the small triangle in the project tree next to file structure. You can also have a look at pre-orientations and the like (pose --> translation & rotation).

Cheers

Daniel
