Hello everyone,
I have surveyed several mills at my company. I have a workflow using two Faro scanners in concert with spheres and checkerboard targets. It has worked fairly well but each position takes about 8 minutes per position. I was curious if anybody has used a Riegl scanner with the camera attached for similiar projects and using the targetless workflow.

Hi there,
There are lots of police forces in the UK and elsewhere using the VZ-400 and VZ-400i for crash scene capture, all without using targets for registration.
Setup and scan time per scan position is around 1 minute, depending on density. Using a wheeled tripod makes it really quick.

you can dump your spheres in the bin. the riegl is top-notch.
scans extremely fast, no leveling, pics while scanning. You can do a lot in a short period of time. Riscan software is also heaven to work with.
the only drawback is the weight of the instrument.
I do almost everything with my riegl, only small indoors and where the ceilings are very important i use my old tx5

I should have been a little more specific. We currently own a VZ400i and use it lots underground and outside on surface. I was wondering about the viability of using it inside a building, such as a mill. The areas are tighter and I am concerned with its limited field of view compared to a Faro. I am also concerned about accuracy with targets vs targetless. It would speed up my progress greatly if I could use the VZ400i with targetless registration and get similiar results as two Faro scanners.

it is a break even event. the weight if the vz400i compensates for the spheres

I am assuming if you use your TX5 along side your VZ400i, would your workflow be similar to this:
1. Register TX5 data in Scene (target or C2C)
2. Export from Scene
3. Import into Riscan as a single scan position
4. Extract plane patches and MSA into VZ400i data

i do the excact opposite
i export the scans from riscan with the data i want to use to georerefence the tx5 data.
i make a cluster with the imported few riegl scans in scene and c2c with the tx5 cluster.
i then export the tx5 cluster to e57 or laz for further use in pointcab or other software.
i must test the other way like you describe once i find some time.
