DATA LOSS! Every surveyors worst nightmare

Post by Geo Scan Surveying » Wed Jun 05, 2019 6:55 pm

On a small (but quite tricky) scanning job today of about 60 scans i encountered an error message after the fourth scan telling me that it wasnt able to record the data for that scan. I rescanned from the same position and received no error message and everything seemed normal so i continued. Each subsequent scan beeped on completion and showed the preview on the screen, with no error messages, all as per usual

Upon uploading to my computer only the first four scans were there and so it appears i have lost everything from after the original warning message. I have sent the card to a professional data recovery company in the hope that it was somehow recorded although i am not too hopeful :(

I am wondering if anyone else has encountered the same problem or has any advice to prevent it from happening again.

Kind regards,
Sam

Sam,

Years ago I had an issue with s couple of scans that I thought were normal but ended up corrupt. Nothing like that has happened for years.

What scanner you using?

Happened to me with a focus 3D model 130.

Directly after it happened, actually while I was trying to figure it out it entered the dreaded reboot loop death spiral. The problem was finally solved by updating the firmware of all things, which I had to do in a very unauthorized way as the drive wasn’t functioning under the scanner OS. there was some sort of bug in the firmware that would disable the sd reader and throw it into an endless reboot loop, triggered in some unknown way.

You likely have some other problem but just in case I might give updating the firmware a try to eliminate this from your list of possibilities, that is if your sd reader is still working.

Hope your luck is as good as mine, that scanner is still kickin years later.

Like Eugene and Felix, I think what you have experienced is simply a glitch or bug, but it is worth checking the little lock switch on your sd card. We superglue all of our card's switches before use, so they cannot be accidentally locked. Lesson learned the hard way :?

I have had some writing errors before (not a lot). I tend to keep 3 spare sd-cards in the box and immediately change cards after the slightest hick-up. Check the first card and after the first scan on the new card check that as well with a laptop.

It's electronics after all

I had it happening on a P40, so yeah..it happens, lesson learned. Is to import ASAP, sometimes even on the spot...

It might be worth to see if data recovery services can do something for you, but it's usually cheaper to just rescan if you can.

Every time I have seen this problem, it came from the SD card either being locked or corrupted.

Our On-Site Registration eliminates this issue, because it is sending a copy of the scans via WiFi to your laptop or tablet.

I deleted two days of scanning once, thinking it had been backed up! I had to go back to site and do it all again. Site happened to be a refinery...

It's not a mistake I will make again.

Human error is one thing. And we learn from it. But when the hardware or strorage breaks down... that's really disappointing. I hope you manage to get the data back.
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

I had once placed a cf card from a total station fieldbook for a second on the top of the car to get everything in the boot. Obviously i forgot about the card and drove off.
I returned an hour later to search for it but it was gone, a day's worth of measuring gone. the boss wasn't too happy

that's a bad day at the office for sure :(

I will share one of my worst days, just to be fair haha

I was on-site at a refinery with a client. I had a colleague with me that was leap-frogging spheres while I talked to the client about scan positions, scanner operation, etc. Keep in mind, this was before there was cloud2cloud, and you had to get the targets right to make everything register. We were probably 5 scans away from finishing the entire unit, and all of a sudden I see one of the spheres moving from the corner of my eye. I turn around and had to watch a truck driving away with one of the spheres attached to its back bumper.
