Wanted: Tolerance analysis between as-build scan and 3D model?

Post by Jambrooks »

As an E&M construction engineer working on a large UK construction program I am now involved in the topography strategy and am on a steep learning curve!

If any one could provide any guidance on emerging tech; I'm scoping for a software platform that is capable of conducting analysis between a PDMS 3D model and the point-cloud data-set (E57/PTX formats) from an as-built scan to identify where tolerances have not been met (with an effective way of communicating the errors) in terms of walls, openings, rails, anchor plates/bolts. It has been suggested to me that this can be achieved by suites that are commercially available? Could anybody suggest where to look?

King regards,
JB

JB,

We have a software tool, Verity, which sounds like it could be a good fit. Verity functions with the purpose to compare point clouds to as-built models for verifying that models align to the existing conditions or that existing conditions are built to the design models. Both .e57 and .ptx files are compatible and the geometry can be anything so long as it is actually modeled in PDMS or a similar program.

Feel free to message me if you would like to discuss further.

What are the export file formats from PDMS?

If you can export the model as a STEP or IGES file, it sounds like something that could be done in 3DReshaper by way of a deviation analysis.

We used this method to determine if bolt flanges on parts built in UK would fit to bolt flanges on parts built in Australia when they were all shipped to the assembly site in the US.

Hi JB,
For sure, what you describe is a typical application for 3dreshaper.
A few additional comments:
- the pdf shared by melshy below is a 3DPDF dirextly exported from 3dreshaper.
- 3dreshaper is already heavily used in your industry
- you can ask for a 15 days trial version for 3dreshaper!
