PointCLoud for Virtual Reality

Post by dineshkimraj »

Good day All,

Our company is looking in the use of pointclouds in virtual reality.
Can anyone point me in the right direction regarding software use or tutorials focusing on this use?

Thanks

One solution I've seen is Neos Vr, which allows you to import pts format to view point clouds in VR.

There's not many other options that I've seen for viewing point cloud data directly, most solutions are viewers for mesh geometry, not point cloud data. One good viewer for mesh geometry is insite vr: https://www.insitevr.com/

Thanks a lot.
If we decide to model the point cloud, would insite vr still work or is there another option?

Looks like this thread points to some more software that may be a viable solution: viewtopic.php?t=13516

Hi,

Our software is VR compatible and allows you to visualise all your point cloud data alongside 3D vector models, maps, pictures, measurements, etc.. all in VR. Please see the videos below for examples or see our website here www.veesus.com

youtu.be/-imzYtBFthY

You can download a 14 day free trial from our website. The only requirement for VR being that you have SteamVR installed.

Any questions I'm happy to answer.

Many Thanks

Mark

We have our own VR room setup. Right now point clouds are limited as to how many points the VR can handle. We are working with a developer to be able to bring in large point files and finding the right graphic cards. Looking at a workstation with multiple graphic cards to handle. Small point clouds work, but are not as clear and realistic as we want. We currently handle up to about 25 million points. We also have a back pack laptop so we can walk freely about.

That's a really cool idea, and I can't believe I've never come across it before. Adding the fact that you have your own room makes it even more interesting. As for the number of points in a cloud, that's about where we are at I believe for our maximum. I know once the file sizes start to go beyond 10GB, our software/video card hold us back from going any larger.

We are using Scene LT (free) from Faro with Oculus Rift.
It does almost everything we need.
Point cloud visualisation and measurements, CAD import (vrml).
It's fast, easy to use and free.
Check it out and let us know what you think.
