Geomagic Design X - Big .pts file (127gb) not importing
I have a weird issue where a large file doesnt want to be imported in Geomagic Design X.
For a job i am working on a third party's point cloud, but one of their files just keeps on anoying me..
Hardware:
i7-6700K
W5100-4GB
ASUS - Max Hero VIII
32GB RAM
2x256GB ssd
1x 8TB HDD
Usually the loading of big files are just slow, but GDX powers trough.
Now i have the thing where GDX starts its import as usual, but simply ends the next morning in a screen like the software just restarted.
The file is originally a .rcp file, and exported to .PTS
I have done big files (100+gb) without a problem in the past.
Even a new export from Recap gives the same error.
(In recap the point cloud just loads fine and doesnt show any sign of corruption)
Anyone any tips?

Have you tried importing/exporting it again from Cyclone or Cloud Compare?

We dont have Cyclone nor Cloudcompare
Only available tools are:
Scene 4.8
Recap
Geomagic Design X
[Edit:]
Trying to export the file yet again from recap, rebooted everything beforehand so it should be as efficient as possible.

Re: Geomagic Design X - Big .pts file (127gb) not importing
Could be that you're running out of memory on 32GB RAM for a 127gb PTS file. What's the largest PTS file you've imported successfully on that PC before and how big is the resultant native point cloud file? Outside of memory, many older point cloud software apps have a limit of ~2 or ~4 billion points per model, i.e. 2^31 as a signed integer index or 2^32 unsigned. If your PTS doesn't have RGB data in it, points take about 35-45 bytes per line, so you're most probably past 2 billion points and quite possibly past 4 billion. (40 bytes per point at 127gb gives you just over 4 billion points).

Sounds like a lot of data moving around on that PC. How is it for free space? This could be a cause.
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

I just wrote that and had only read 2x256 SSD - I missed the 8Tb HDD!Matt Young wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 2:11 pm Sounds like a lot of data moving around on that PC. How is it for free space? This could be a cause.

I have let it load over the weekend and Cloudcompare (tough terribly slow) manages to load it!
Thanks for the tips!
Gonna save this now because our sys-admin have found some additional RAM for me
@Matt,
No problem!

Re: Geomagic Design X - Big .pts file (127gb) not importing
Update: Cloud Compare doesnt handle point clouds of 3,4 billion points and freezes completely
PC has recieved a RAM upgrade to 64Gb.
Currently trying to get hold of a trail key for Leica Cyclone register..
The file we recieved was a .rcp (with support files) and no matter what i try, i can only export it with to .pts
.E57 export crashes at the 10% mark.
Do you guys have a recommended way to bring the size down to a manageable file?
