Hello Eugene,

thank you for sharing, it looks promising! I'm thinking about using it on facade decoration which is impossible to scan in sufficient detail from terrain because of its hight over ground. Do you think it could be used on a selfie stick scanning for example a facade from a window? What is the quality and resolution of the stills? Would you mind to share some data?

Thank you,
Jiri

You could definitely use it on a pole or selfie stick. There is a 1/4 thread adapter included on the sensor.

As for details, it depends on how small. I have not run a test to verify this but for larger details it would be ok. However, anything smaller than 1cm, I think would be problematic. The Xtion sensor that ships with the DPI-8X is better quality in my opinion but at least you can get some outdoor scanning with the intel.

I thought the Intel sensor is more advanced and more accurate than the old Xtion, is there a noticeable difference, also did you try to register with a Faro scan

Thanks Eugene

The data looks a little less accurate on the Intel sensor but close to the Xtion. I have registered DotProduct data to FARO data before but not specifically with this new sensor. It really should not make a difference. Best way to register is with targets.

Here is a quick one I did yesterday with sub zero temperatures. At least it was sunny.

I am impressed at the data you can get in sunlight. I did have some issues getting the top of the car and when the sensor was almost directly facing the sun as you will see in the first image below.

Does this improve the ability of the software to scan in daylight conditions?

It is not so much the software as it is the sensor. I don't think that I could get anything close to what I have shown you with the original Xtion sensor or a Freestyle.
