A good solution with Faro scanner is to use Trimble software Realworks in place Scene.
In my opinion, it's more powerfull and more "survey" than scene.

Robin,
You have a very tough decision to make. Budgets can force you to buy something that may not be right for your scope of works. I suggest taking the time, set up a scan area of a building, inside or out or some other site. Call the sales teams from the different scanner manufacturers and test them apples to apples on the same playing field. With targets and without. Put their software to the test. Might take you a bit of your time, but then look at the data and perhaps you can go to the budget makers and show them what makes the best sense for your firm. Many of the manufacturers can get you payment plans to afford a bit more. That said, I've used many of the scanners talked about in this thread and most are capable of producing great results.

Dear Robin,
I'll respect your wish not to be contacted directly via email/telephone.
Just want to let you know that if you wish to do a test-drive with the FARO Focus scanner and/or Scene software, you can contact me for a free trial.
Best regards,
Marnix van der Wolk

You have a DM! (In dutch )
I've send you some backstory as well.
@ others, I also still am looking at the other brands, currently looking at ease of processing scans to CAD (our main interest)
Please keep on suggesting! I do keep an list!

Hi there, that's my first post here.
This is the exact situation I find myself right now: Faro S70 or Leica RTC 360?
Wondering which one did you choose, and why. May you share with us?

Just going to say my part here and leave. While deciding on which scanner is right for you is a big thing, it represents about 10% of the effort you are about to expel on your way to success. A deep understanding of laser scanning, software and manual extraction skills is really what you should focus on.
Good luck on your journey!

I agree with that. Realworks has a bit of a learning curve but it is very good for pure cloud-to-cloud registration (better results than Scene especially in large projects). Trimble used to sell Faro units branded as Trimble TX5, so they built in support for Faro in Realworks.Vincent DENIS wrote: ↑Fri Sep 14, 2018 6:46 am I

Trimble TX8 is quite a good scanner, too, but it is twice as heavy as Faro. By the way, we recently did a large project using both TX8 and Faro M70. With TX8 we scanned outdoors and large indoor spaces, and Faro was used for the smaller rooms. All scans were registered in Realworks. Scans from the two units registered nicely together.

Re: Looking for recommendations for a new scanner (and maybe software)
Hi Robin,
Did you ever settle on a scanner? I am currently in a similar situation with my new company, putting a business plan together.
My experience is Leica mainly, all scanners and software, Faro scanners and software and Trimble scanners and hardware.
I was pleasantly surprised by the Trimble scanners, the TX-8 was a good piece of kit and a lot less expensive than Leica, however, Leica do make the most accurate scanner with the P40 in my experience. A good option would be to purchase the RTC360 (use control with a theodolite etc) and then hire the P40 as and when it is required, bigger jobs etc. Be interested to get your thoughts and what you ended up going for.

Re: Looking for recommendations for a new scanner (and maybe software)
From my side, I can say that the most important technical parameters for 3D scanner are:
Leveling axis compensation accuracy and resolution. Looking to these parameters you can check if the scanner is professional or toy...
If you are working from medium to very large scanning projects (100 - 4000+). You need to register all scans with minimum error, and these parameters have the greatest influence on this process. Of course, there are projects there is no need for high registration accuracy, but sometimes you can get better equipment for the same price.
Size and weight just for convenience.
We are using Trimble TX8 and Faro X330 scanners. TX8 for outside and main inside network alignment and Faro for rest inside scanning. Sometimes we are using only FARO for small building or monuments scanning. Trimble Realworks software is very good for registration as-well
