Hi,

I have faced similar issues in the past with various different companies. I once sent a point cloud to be modelled to be compared to one we had done in-house already to compare. It wasn't good.
However, we have since sourced some excellent companies who we use when our workload gets a little too heavy and they are excellent.
We also model work ourselves and we are based in Australia with offices abroad too, so if anyone would like to have a chat about our capabilities feel free to drop me a message. We are quite busy ourselves so we can even recommend some companies we use regularly too.
Cheers,
Stuart

Hi guys,

I can say with confidence that I understand the pain. There was a time at my previous firm where an Indian firm was used to trail Revit modeling for us. We had done the model and had them do it also. The quality of the work was horrendous. It seemed they would model elements that didn't make any sense just because it almost looked like it in the cloud. Like a shiny glass floor at ground level reflected up 30m to level 6, and was coincidently at the edge of the roof at level 6 in the cloud. So they modeled a walkway hanging in the air 30m up. Logic says a walkway cant be unsupported 30m up, but that's what we got.

Though now I am on the other side of the fence. I do a fair amount of outsourced work for a few guys (bit from scanning and bit from traditional surveying), some of which I made contact with through this forum. I recently did a project where the project had already been done by an Indian firm, but there were issues.

Whilst redoing the revit model, I got upset every 30min because of the absolute lack of QC in the original model. Massive assumptions had been made and the overall look was bad. Windows had been inserted where it had actually been inset shelves, walls where there are no walls, no walls where there should be walls.

For me its a double edged sword, since I do the same kind of work, and have to discourage this kind of work from being outsourced due to some firms having such a bad deliverable giving us all a bad reputation, but then again I am also reliant on this type of work.

Andy from Aus in post #4 knows his stuff and to anyone in Aus I would recommend him. Below is a example of work that had to be redone. It seems most of the guys think that if they have revit, its a quick buck to be made, but then do half work. Everyone, including me, can and do make mistakes or may miss a thing here or there. But there is a limit to what is acceptable and what is just lack of experience and QC.

My personal opinion is that the guys trying to do the modeling has no experience in the construction/engineering/architecture field, but just tech/cheap labour. Having a nice computer, a point cloud and revit does not a good draftsman make.

You generally get what you pay for.

Irrespective of who you send work to, or where - you must specify the scope of the work to be done in detail.

Start small, and if the results are bad then move on.

Be prepared to visit your sub-contractors face to face and explain what you want from them.

Understand their working practices.

Don't just send a point cloud and expect a decent model in return. Ask yourself 'what would I want to be told to do, if it were me?'.
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Have to totally agree with you on this one mate.

I’m in the same position as you now and outsourcing sucks - I try and keep all my work within the country with solid clients.

Thank you for this review Malte.

I see you're based in Norway, and I certainly don't know anyone out there, but as far as anyone wondering the same in the US, I can vouch for ARC out of California (https://www.arc-corporate.com/) and Prologue Systems out of Richmond VA (http://www.prologuesystems.com/). Both companies have been extremely helpful and accommodating when called upon, and extremely knowledgeable and pay close attention to detail.

Hi Guys,

It was sad to hear that you had a bad experience in business with Indian. Instead, if you wish to outsource any kind of work with anybody, kindly make sure you check the following points -

1) Check whether they are certified and have enough team members to get the assigned task properly before the deadline
2) Check their customers' testimony
3) The existence in the market
4) Get a recommendation from friends, colleagues or family members.

Thanks Regards

I’ve been modelling pc in Revit for years now.

We have a surveying/revit modelling company in Sydney Australia, I don’t see the point in Outsourcing outside of your country it’s just headaches - Time zone - Language barriers - QA

Also you don’t even know if the company doing the job are surveyors or know anything about the industry but they think they can model pc.

I’ve found from Outsourcing myself it’s just easier to do all your work within your country and pick a phone during business hours for chat to resolve any issues.

You might pay a little more but save a lot of time and headaches.
