I want to inform you about the recent announcement of FARO SCENE 2018. Please read here the press release:
https://faro.gcs-web.com/news-releases/ ... igh-detail

Whats different to the previous Version SCENE 7.1?

- With Firmware 6.3 for the Focus S150 and S350 we integrated the functionality of High Detailed Scan. This allows you to shoot a low resolution scan and rescan areas of interest with a higher resoltuion. This can be used to scan far away targets or objects of interest to gain improved registration accurcy and quality, time savings during the capturing process and lower file size (usually ~ 150MB per Scan). SCENE 2018 supports these detail scans seamlessly and intergates it into the common registration workflows automatically.

- SCENE 2018 introduces a new, FARO uniquie kind of HDR image quality called FARO Laser-HDR™. This function allows you to leverage your intensity values of the scanner to improve the RGB image quality. It works for all FARO laser scanners even if they are not capable of HDR image capturing Like the FARO X series with no HDR. Using FARO Laser-HDR™ you have more details within your images and scan colors especially for very bright and very dark areas, where also usual HDR approaches runs into limits (Combination of HDR scanning and FARO Laser-HDR will result in a never seen image quality!). Here you can find some image samples for the effect of the functionality for FARO X-Series data.
https://faro.box.com/s/lp2v4fqj7lv4v2fpv5coaomr5u1etpk4

- We improved the saving process of SCENE which allows you to reduce time effort for fls scan saving by 50%. Also the quick view is twice as fast now.

- The new SCENE Version allows to export full resolution panoramas independent of your selected scan resolution.

- Some other improvements are integrated for better VR usability and compatbility to latest VR devices, improved error handling procedure, automated scaling of scan manipulators in correspondence view, 75% faster WebShare Cloud and SCENE 2 Go export, improved image compensation for exported images, rendering of textured models in VR and of course it includes smaller Bug fixes

...to me it may looks like the best SCENE Version of the past years ;)

Please share your comments and also feedback to the community how you have leveraged the new SCENE 2018 functions in your daily projects.

Hi,

This is a test I just did on a castle scanning. Done with a Focus 120 some years ago.
The second picture uses the new laser-HDR feature. It brings a better contrast indeed.

Yan,
Thanks for your samples.
I was curious how different your images were from quick enhancements using the 'adjust color' palette tools in Preview (Mac). I didn't spend a lot of time with the screenshot from your oldest image, but the 'Exposure', 'Contrast', and 'Sharpness' sliders did improve the image without having to run it through the new laser-HDR feature. The sky detail was lost in the process, but the window muntins did pop out a bit (on my monitor). Overall, I liked how the stone courses were expressed nicely using the new laser-HDR version. Thanks FARO team!

Is the laser HDR processing available in the classic interface?

That looks weird, indeed. Any chance you could share one of these scans with me for investigation of the issue?

I want to clarify this a bit so that nobody is disappointed when he doesn’t see such an improvement in his project:

The map creation is now indeed around 75% faster in the best-case scenario. This best-case scenario (compared to the time needed for the same settings in the previous version) occurs with the following export settings and project properties:
- SCENE-style overview map
- No scan overlays
- Project does not yet have scan point clouds

The worst-case scenario occurs with the opposite export settings and project properties. In this case, you will only experience a time reduction between 5% and 10%.

A significant reduction of the used main memory in a certain step of the export is also achieved for most projects.

The panorama image creation is not yet faster in SCENE 2018. But the next SCENE version will also bring a significant performance improvement in this regard. After that, the combined speed improvement will be up to 75% for some export settings and project properties.
