We had our Leica TS15 stolen this morning from the side of a road in an affluent area of Barnet, London.
Quite a dramatic story.
I was about 15 metres away from the Leica box looking at a few of our setting out points when a guy grabbed it and ran to a car down the road.
I gave chase, got in the car and had a bit of a scuffle (bad move I know). I managed to get the box out of the car before the driver came round and put it back in. I then noticed a wad of cash on the dash board (£50's) so I grabbed a handful and dropped them out of the car in the hope they would go after them.
The guys then drove off with me still in their car thinking I had their cash still. I told them I dropped it and they eventually let me out.
Really shouldn't have got in the car, stupid move.
The guys had Irish accents, don't want to stereotype but ...

I'd have done the same thing. Glad you survived. Maybe it's time to start attaching weights to scanners? I think there was a story a few months back about a total station or two being nicked off the road in broad daylight. Makes me happy that I only scan at small gas plants in the Canadian forest, only need to worry about bears at unfenced sites.

I think we are going to start chaining them to solid objects in public areas. This is the second time it has happened in 2 years so really dis heartening.
The gas terminal in the forest sounds like a great job in comparison.

I've been hearing of threats with weapons in broad daylight in London as part of the thefts. You were lucky to have not been harmed.
I'm considering giving this to our guys http://www.vestguard.co.uk/eveaid-perso ... spray.html
Its becoming ridiculous now, low police numbers...
