X130 Tripod

Post by SauceySurveyor »

Hi all, I am looking into getting a new tripod. My company has previously gone for "laser scanning" lightweight tripods but we all know that they are no different to any other tripod apart from the bracket and a hefty price tag.
What film/photography tripods would you recommend that would be a good replacement for a generic carbon fibre laser scanning tripod?
I don't mind if it weights a bit more but I just want something that's sturdy and portable for lightweight use indoors.

Thanks
Scott

There are plenty of past LSF threads on tripods to read -I'd start there.
FARO scanners are compact, so any quality carbon fiber photography tripod will serve you well. The 'Mountaineer' Gitzo that FARO ships with its scanners is actually quite good. The type of work you actually do, will of course, make a difference in the type of equipment you need.

I have a Manfrotto Triman 028B.
It's Aluminium, not extra light, but you can reasonably extend it up to 2 meters in case of need and it stays stable. Above that height you need another tripod or be careful because it's less stable.
For interiors I often find extensibility a good value that compensates the extra weight.

So I have a high level tripod that I use for external scans so this would mainly be for internal use and light outdoor use.

Our Benro that came with our X series works very well for us. We bought a second one to use with our Istar camera as well. It was just under $500 US.
We use it indoor and outdoor unless we need the extra range of a 10 ft tripod.
