Just a fun little project...laser scan and sonar

Laser scanned and hydro-ed a little bridge. Hydro via echo81's R2Sonic 2024 trasducer. We really had fun with this one, and echo81 is amazing. We learned a ton from them and had a blast the entire time! Hydro is unlike laser scanning in many ways, but what I found the most intriguing is being able to see into the unknown. Reminds me of the same awakining of sight that I experienced with Thermography.

Although much of the hydro point cloud is smeared together from eye dome lighting in Cloud Compare and the median effect in Adobe Premiere you can clearly see independent swaths(field of view of the transducer & boat path). Just for kicks we cranked up the 2024 to 700khz and narrowed the swath over some of the more interesting features, which increased the point density to near laser scan resolutions.

If you have any desire to fill the subsurface void laser scanning can leave near water then I highly recommend talking to echo81 :D

I imagine there is a dedicated sonar clipping box tool for creating a path and sequenced slices, but was CloudCompare used to combine all of the sonar and lidar data, or was some additional software used? I especially liked the combined images above and below the water line -very effective visualizations!

Jonathan,

It is always good to see sonar data. What form is the sonar data in is it plain text, or are you using a binary format. We occasionally get our hands on some sonar, but never anything that has laser and sonar combined.

Thanks guys.

Scott P - Get my inspiration from the best ;) Both data sets are referenced to state plane coordinates, but remain separate point cloud files. I just imported them both into cloud compare to make this video because of the EDL shading. I guess if I wanted them to be in one single file then I would combine them in Microstation and re-export, but I don't find that to be necessary.

Scott R - No Redfish in this muddy water, but we did see a few other fish. Clipped out most of them, but tried to leave the trees.

Tad - wish I was was that talented, but the music is from FMA(Free music archive). Sounds a bit 80s to me, but everyone else like it.

Graham - .xyz .pod .las is all I got. Like I said above they are not truly combined, but I could combine them in about 5 minutes.

John - I wish, but we did find a car! It is what the yellow spotlight shines on in the video. The scale is hard to understand, when looking at this stuff. I thought it was a Barbie Corvette Power Wheels toy at first, but then I measured it at 12' long. The trees are massive. In one part of the video you can see a large panel of steel sheet pile that failed during the 2016 flood, and following that a large concrete slab on the bottom.
