Definitely has some applications. A friend of mine has invested quite a bit of $$ in his company which does 3D selfies. The quality of the meshes they produce is excellent. I can't speak to the accuracy of the models but they look very detailed and the texture quality is excellent.
In the short term, a photogrammetric system for autopsies and documenting bodily injuries is an application I think is long overdue.
