Recent 3D scanning project: a wheel cap
One of the recent 3D scanning projects, with a combination of two scanners used: Artec Eva captured a general shape of the object and Space Spider captured its small and narrow parts. Only Artec Studio 12 and its algorithms were used for post-processing, nothing else
Results:
- 14 scans in total (some are small, but contain a very intricate geometry)
- 1.5 million polygons in a simplified 3D-mesh
- 3D scanning time: around 30 minutes
- Post-processing time: around 40-50 minutes in total, including all steps: registration of raw 3D frames, building mesh, simplification, etc
Here are some screenshots:

Looks perfect
Are you scanning in color mode? As a former Eva user i'm also wandering about registration process time.

Yes, for Space Spider geometry+texture tracking mode is the default one, for Eva we used geometry+texture mode as well.paranoiahasu wrote: ↑Tue Nov 14, 2017 12:25 pm Looks perfect

However, this particular object can be scanned with Eva Lite (i.e. in "geometry only" scanning mode with disabled texture tracking and capture), since the geometrical detailing is sufficient.
According to my experience, Eva Lite is often used for 3D-scanning various car parts (for example, one of a popular applications is 3D-scanning of place under the pedals to produce a customized car mat).

Why did you use the Eva on this? Wouldn't the spider have done the job?

Re: Recent 3D scanning project: a wheel cap
Hi! I can confirm that it is possible to use only Spider/Space Spider to capture an object of such kind. Moreover, this workflow with "Artec Spider only" is popular among our clients worldwide
By the way, "Eva only" is also capable to 3D-scan this type of object, the usage of a particular 3D-scanner model (or a combination of two scanners) depends on the desired output, the exact 3D geometry detailing that you would like to receive on this output 3D mesh and the time limit for this scanning & processing project, etc.
In this particular scenario, what we needed was to capture a "general" shape of a wheel cap very quickly with Eva. It was especially beneficial for its "outer" part: you can see on the picture that it is mostly flat, without intricate and/or small geometrical features.
Then we added small and thin geometrical 3D-details, captured with Spider, into this Artec Studio project and combined a 3D-mesh, using both Eva and Spider data.

Re: Recent 3D scanning project: a wheel cap
one basic question. i’m looking for an handheld scanner to detailing a terrestrial laser scanning survey. how is it possible to register data from Artec Eva and from a terrestrial laser scanner (Z+F, Riegl, Faro, ....).
thanks.

@ Gabrio
Geomagic, CloudCompare and as far as I know in Faro Scene as well.

This seems interesting, as you're using Z+F Scout I wonder if there is some process like that with Artec devices?gabrio wrote: ↑Sun Sep 23, 2018 10:47 pm one basic question. i’m looking for an handheld scanner to detailing a terrestrial laser scanning survey. how is it possible to register data from Artec Eva and from a terrestrial laser scanner (Z+F, Riegl, Faro, ....).

Re: Recent 3D scanning project: a wheel cap
Hello,
We have used the Artec Ray to scan the engine room of a ship. Then used the Artec Leo, very similar to Eva, to capture more detail in certain areas of the engine room and brought all the data into Artec Studio to merge them into one mesh. What is nice about Artec Studio is you can use any of their scanners on the same project and merge the data together. Unfortunately you can't export color with the Ray tho.
