Recent 3D scanning project: a stingray
I am attaching some screenshots of the final mesh (with/without texture) and a photo with a pen near a stingray for size reference.
Below are some notes about scanning path and equipment used:
3D Scanner: Artec Space Spider.
Software: Artec Studio 12
Scanning time: 12 minutes with regular scanning settings (for example, we did not increase "Sensitivity" and kept it on a default level)
Number of scans: 5
- 1st one with an upper part of a stingray under all possible angles
- 2nd one with a bottom part under all possible angles
- 3rd one is a special one with the upper part, bottom one and an edge, so all scans will perfectly align together based on this one.
- 4th and 5th scans are to specially capture the very thin edges of a stingray.
Setup: scans 1, 2 were made with stingray laying on the table on a paper with a text (which works as an additional texture background), the special attention was paid to scanning all small holes and a mouth. Scans 3, 4 and 5 were made with Space Spider in one hand and a stingray in another
We'll upload the mesh at Sketchfab soon!

That's a great looking dataset, thank's for sharing the images and info.
Can I ask what the purpose of the survey was, or was it just for interest?

Hi,
Please accept my apologies for the delay in replying.
Please accept my apologies for the delay in replying.
It was a mixture of client's request ("Are you able to capture that much details in 3D?") and our own 3D scanning experiments. So overall it was a fantastic experience: the client loved the result and we added +1 interesting object to our own 3D collectionFormula1982 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2017 10:27 am That's a great looking dataset, thank's for sharing the images and info.

Excellent work, looks really crisp and detailed !
What would be the differences if you were using a Leo ? Better texture quality maybe ?

Re: Recent 3D scanning project: a stingray
Thank you! As I mentioned, we're now preparing the mesh to be uploaded to Sketchfab, so I hope it will be available for download soon, not just on screenshots
I'd say that Space Spider will still provide more 3D-detailing (especially when geometry of the object is very thin and/or very small). Overall, while Leo has superior reconstruction abilities and can get sharper edges and more resolution compared to Artec Eva, in terms of field of application, Leo will still be much more like Eva than like Spider. In other words, Leo can do almost anything Eva can, but can't be a substitute for a Spider
