FARO SERVICE-- CALIBRATION & WARRANTIES
We have recently had our FARO Focus 3DX 330 out for over a month for service and are a bit frustrated with the level of service. I am reaching out to see how other FARO users handle calibrations and warranties. Do you calibrate annually even if your unit is measuring accurately? Do you test internally? If so, what method do you use? Are you extending your warranty annually for your scanners? If so, why or why not?
We are weighing the pro's and cons of each and basically looking for best practices as we make these business decisions. Thanks in advance.

Re: FARO SERVICE-- CALIBRATION & WARRANTIES
We do not send our X330 in for yearly calibration. We did not extend our warranty due to $$$$. Our scanner does not generate income. We opt to pay for the calibration if needed. Our scanner is 4 years old. That said, our scanner gets very little use compared to most. We do a quarterly test to verify the measurements. We simply place checkerboards or targets at known distances and then check that the scanner measurements match the knowns.

We used to send it annually, I believe we're at 18 months now. It's good to check the 180 degree mark for any data shift, we had a problem there once.
But we stopped the servicing and warranty due to money and use frequency. With that being said, we've used it extensively this year and it's due for a calibration.

Re: FARO SERVICE-- CALIBRATION & WARRANTIES
We just decided to stop paying for warranty. If you read the warranty and it's references to the user manual carefully, basically it all comes down to Faro making the call if the defect is due to wear and tear, or manufacturer defect. After having a battery die last year and Faro not replacing it ($800-900) I realized they were raking us over the coals and were never going to pay for any further problems of a 4 year old machine. They are very likely to say any further issues are wear and tear and not covered by warranty.
We will run internal checks of the scans several times a year using known distances, then if there is an issue send it in for calibration.

Thanks JC. We are doing the same as well. We've run across too many service issues with FARO. We also needed to purchase an extra charging cradle to have one in equipment room as well as in the field. Quote was $1000 for the cradle. NO thanks.

Re: FARO SERVICE-- CALIBRATION & WARRANTIES
Keep in mind, now if you do plan to purchase a warranty, you must FIRST pay to have the machine calibrated. Over $3,000, then purchase the warranty. But they say the good news is, they will do the next calibration for free.
The outlay of cash being $7-$8,000 just isn't financially feasible for most.
Thank goodness there are other companies that do the calibration for much less $ and get it done in a couple of weeks tops.

Re: FARO SERVICE-- CALIBRATION & WARRANTIES
Yeah, it may be vitally important someday for us to get a calibration and I would love to try somebody other than Faro for once.
