yep, some of those. Plenty of different ones around, Intel, Samsung and others.Jason Warren wrote:Like one of these?danielgadowski wrote:One thing i could suggest would be instead of going for the Raid on normal SSD's go for the PCIe SSD drives. They can be even twice as fast as normal SSD!

Instead of connecting to the system via SATA interface, which is a weak link you use your PCI-E bus to access your data at a much higher rate.
Shorter life span of the SSD's is a trade off thou

I would probably go for a processor with a faster singular core speed. Something over 3 GHz. Depending on what you are going to use it for obviously. Bear in mind that majority of software uses mainly one core for majority of operations and multicores just for some.
Also i still believe that Quadro cards are overrated for laser scanning applications

Re: New Workstation
I would use it for
-faro scene
-veesus arena 4d
-autocad civil3d with kubit extensions
-autocad revit
Is it to overrated for these applications. I want to have a machine that will last for the next 3-4 years and with the possibility for upgrades afterwards, that's why i choose the dell 7910 tower

Re: New Workstation
Not sure about Faro and Arena, but Autodesk products rely mainly on clock speed. Bump up that processor speed and you will be good.

Thanks for all the feedback and advice.
Any updated recommendations?
I'm looking for a workstation capable of handling big point cloud projects (200+ scans) using the following :
Faro Scene + VR
Cyclone Register
Jetstream and Cloudworks
Revit
Navisworks
What should I be looking at?
Thanks for your help!

The 2990WX has reached Cinebench scores of over 7000, over twice that of my non-overclocked 1950x. Pretty crazy

That is a lot of information there!
I may need a few years to try and get to the bottom of it...
I'm not really into that game and my computer guy doesn't really have the time to explore unfortunately.
There doesn't seem to be anything available off the shelf for this kind of applications, right?
But thanks heaps for sharing, I did learn a few things.

Re: New Workstation
No problem! Off the shelf, probably not. However, building your own computer is really quite easy. It is really just a matter of picking the right components. It is really as easy as putting a few legos together; granted, they are some pretty expensive legos.Damien3D wrote: ↑Tue Feb 12, 2019 11:32 pmquote=fillway post_id=74999 time=1549516027 user_id=41030]

If you decide to go down the DIY path, give me a shout. there are plenty of great resources available online to help you, including step by step walkthroughs. You may even get lucky and find a build guide for your exact configuration, although it is generally the same procedure, no matter what parts you happen to pick
