Re: Faro backup battery - project
I was able to mail the seller.
In fact they decided to exclude Italy in last year due to the extremely low reliability of our postal service.
I live in an area where postal service is still reliable, so he relaxed the requisites and I was able to buy the last one.
So I'm the "someone else" and if everything goes as usual in a week I sould receive the connector.
Pre wired is a very nice touch. I soldered similar connectors in the past, but it's a delicate task nonetheless.
Thanks for the link, and thanks also for the very kind offer.
I'll update the post when I'll have the prototype.

Ah, that's good they changed their minds and you got the last one. I look forward to seeing the prototype in due course - good luck!

Re: Faro backup battery - project
Small update.
I received the prewired connector, and assembled the circuit on a veroboard.
Citing young Frankenstein:
Crude yes, primitive yes, perhaps even grotesque.
but it works..
I'm using a 6S battery, and a low batt alarm.
The linear regulator is an LM1084ITADJ
It offers 5A and requires the ususal resistors and input capacitor, plus a tantalum capacitor on the regulated side.
The dissipator is too small, with the battery fully charghed it heats too much, I have to substitute it.
Thanks for the tip on the wired connector! This is the most critical part...

Re: Faro backup battery - project
A little update.
I ordered the pcb from itead, and assembled a new version of the regulator, with a neater PCB and bigger heat sink.
I have to test run it, but it looks a nice solution.
The PCB components are very cheap and easy to install, the only critical part is the lemo connector. Thanks Dave for the wired connector tip!!!

Hello, Massimo,
your project is really good. What are your experiences since the publication of your contribution? And could you publish a schematic of your voltage regulator?
I'd like to thank you for your support.

Re: Faro backup battery - project
Sorry, I missed the post.
I use it when doing long sessions and it works fine.
If you are still interested in the schematic I'll attach it here.

hi max,
i have the same problem and your project is very interesting.
How long you can recharge the Faro.
i'm not an electronics expert and i need more information.
Thanks
Giacomo

Re: Faro backup battery - project
My battery lasts a little bit less than 2 hours.
With a 5-6Ah 6S battery pack I can scan and recharge for an extra couple of hours, and when the battery level warner beeps the scanner is almost 100%.
With two 5-6 Ah packs you can scan for a whole day.
I opted for a very basic linear regulator, so the circuit is very simple but there are limitations. The battery pack should be a 6s...

Re: Faro backup battery - project
I think I have some pcbs around, or if you prefer I have the gerber to have the pcbs manufactured.
The most tricky part is to get the cable with the LEMO already soldered. Hand soldering it is not for the faint of earth
