Yes, the VZ's are great instruments, we use ours in stop-and-go mode, fully mobile and also on a tripod.
You can bolt any high end Leica or Trimble GNSS antennas on top.
Very versatile instruments, built like a tank.
Regards,
Mike.

Hey Paul,

I agree. The more they are used the quicker they can reopen roads so I'm all for it.

Regarding the integrated GPS on a VZ, the supplied unit is L1 only so the absolute accuracy would be a few metres for the registered data which I'm sure is good enough for the police. But as Mike mentioned you can hard wire a Leica, Trimble or any GNSS that can output NMEA strings to a VZ. The VZ decodes these strings and writes the coordinates straight to the scan position in real time. So you can achieve survey grade on the fly to the scanner. And the auto reg software has the smarts to allow each position to translate within the positional uncertainty to get the best registration from the GPS cords.

It would be great to see other vendors like Leica add this functionality to their products as it's very versatile.

Cheers,

Chris

Recent evidence in Nuess just goes to show how the Riegl works without a flutter in all weathers.
I'm not going to go in to the whole political thang with a particular sale, but as I was at the international police workshop it would be worth pointing out a few things which were observed and could be relevant. You all know I work for Leica so no point commenting that this is slightly biased

The fake plane crash that was scanned was an ideal opportunity to put all the manufacturers HW/SW and knowledge to the test. The area was large and split up in to 4 with each manufacture allocated one with the whole area pretending to be part of a much larger area (think MH17), The weather was horrid, almost to the point were we thought the organizers had arranged to to really put us through a test.

out of the 4 teams only 2 completed to any standard at all the test (in my personal view before you all wade in)
only 3 teams put the data in Germany (iPhone accuracy)
only one team stayed to the end of the exercise
only 1 team put the data on to German national coordinate system crucial if in the future the position of evidence is needed to be recreated, or if addition evidence is discovered and needed to be added to the plans.

All the scanners used are amazing bits of kit and they all have pluses and minuses, so to say one is better than another is hog wash or that one is "the best one has been secured" is just an appalling statement. It makes me cross to still hear that people think that a scanner is a replacement for any other piece of tech. It's just a tool, put it in your tool box of other tools and use it when it is the right tool for any given job.

Just Sayin ......
(No I don't work for Riegl, but you might find some of my pics in the gallery)
These are real projects, not staged projects.

As far as weather is concerned...
I have used Riegl scanners underground at 8000 feet ASL (Papua New Guinea),
In 48c in Australian deserts, mountain sides in Switzerland,... forensic sites in the UK, mounted on boats in NE Australia..
It's always interesting when manufacturer sales-folk get their feathers ruffled :)
Cheers,
Mike.

My scanner's better than yours! My scanner's better than yours!

Put any scanner in heavy rain or snow and you will have bad data, doesn't matter which one it is. They all do a job and they all have something that another one doesn't.

Get over yourselves guys!
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Was meant to sound like a schoolyard taunt ;) I don't believe the scanner I use is better or worse than any other, it just does different things.

The main point I am making is that is does not matter who is best, lets just say for once! that they are all winners in their own right and move on :D

It's great that the welsh police are using scanners (never mind which ones), we all love scanners, that's why we are here on the Forum :D

It's also great that when we use laser scanners we get to go to all sorts of exciting locations, those Riegl locations on your website look amazing!
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Sounds like Neuss was a success. I'd like to agree with Steve Ramsey & Matt Young and say that you could have all the Gucci kit you want but if you try and undertake a task it's not designed for you might as well use a tape measure (which I still do, if you wonder).
This argument will continue to come around time and again. People can hire, lease, purchase any hardware/software they would like. Sometimes there may be governing factors that have to be considered but ultimately as long as it meets the users requirements who are we to judge.
If the end user is lumbered with a piece of kit they don't want to use, even if it does tick the "political" boxes, all you end up with is an expensive investment not being used. Who does that benefit.
