I'm not a Revit user personally, but last years top rated class at AU was on toposurfaces in Revit by Marcello Sgambelluri
(he also did the 2nd and 3rd rated classes as well as top rated class in 2012!)

I definitely agree that if it is a parameter that can change in the software, it should be accessible to the user. There are a lot of good reasons why people would want to export the Project Point Cloud, especially with the new color balancing feature. I would think that giving people the ability to choose the density of the points would allow them to use it in more downstream applications.

This is a very interesting discussion!
We do not want to reduce the spacing in the Project Point Cloud of SCENE for visualization reasons.
While I do understand your need, I need to say that modifying Windows registry settings is of course not a supported feature of SCENE and may lead to unexpected behavior of the software.
To get the best of both worlds, you might want to have a look at the "Uniform Filter" Plug-In by ATS which is available on the FARO 3D App Center: http://www.faro.com/faro-3d-app-center/ ... orm-filter
This plug-in is doing what you need while offering an easy to use user interface for it:

Looks like the FARO plugin runs about $480.
It would it be wise to offer this free, to get more of us using FARO for applications such as this.
With all the bugs I've dealt with in Scene, I'm reluctant to through more money after it. Just my 2 cents.

What would be the value for yourself to have such a plug-in? Saving disc space as well for the exported as for the imported files, the availability of evenly gridded point cloud data and the saved labour time and cost?
This plug-in is not a FARO product but developed by ATS. Why should they put in effort to develop software which is very benefitial for many users without getting some money back for their effort?
Also, looking at prices charged for other software packages on the market, I think FAROs pricing policy as well as the ones of our partners are more than moderate.
Additionally, the plug-in concept allows you to get exactly those features you need for your daily work instead of paying for numerous things you will never use.

I would echo Eugene's suggestion on the first page to check out CloudCompare. It has some nice subsampling tools and can easily replace steps 3-5 in the original workflow.
I would consider the ability to subsample a point cloud a fundamental tool that should be included, out of the box, in any application designed for point cloud editing. Data sets produced by ground-based lidar are inevitably highly variable in terms of point density and there are numerous reasons why more homogeneous data is desirable.Oliver Buerkler wrote:What would be the value for yourself to have such a plug-in?

I do think the plugin concept makes sense, paying for only the tools that one needs.
It terms of delivering a point cloud, I think delivering a file that has a consistent point spacing across the entire cloud would be very beneficial.
For example, when scanning an interior space, why have 1,000,000 points on a chair (or wall or floor) right in front of the scanner??
