I'm doing some tests with sailing boats and a Faro Focus laser scanner.
I wonder what would be a possible approach to hull reconstruction, both outside and inside.
The boat would be a one off old sailing boat, and the scope is to have a model that allow to keep track of what has been done and where, during maintenance operations.
In my idea I would scan the hull, then after registration and correct orientation of the model I would extract trasversal section (apart maybe for the extremes), then after a section fairing I would perform a loft.
For the inside the situation would be similar, with the "naked" hull (if exposed) reconstructed at first, and then I would model the structural parts, the cabling or anything relevant.
I have Scene and Lupos Basic, so section extraction is possible directly or via a mesh extraction.
For modeling I have Autocad, Inventor and Rhino.
I would value your insight.
Thanks in advance,
Massimo

Re: Hull reconstruction - workflow
Iv'e done a fair bit of work on this sort of thing and this is a lines drawing I created from a scan of a boat.
It took a little research on my part to work out the information shown and the science behind the drawing layout.
You could also look at a peice of software called DelftShip.

Re: Hull reconstruction - workflow
Thanks!
I was able to create an stl hull shape, and extract section lines with Rhino, so after fairing the sections it should be possible to extract a nice looking hull surface.
The main interest would probably be service documentation, so have to check what is really requested.
After hull reconstruction I would need to recreate harness and piping routing, and provide a model that can be checked as a kind of reference manual, if possible.
Otherwise probably a dedicated drawing for every single service (or a group of them) would be a viable solution.
Downloading the free version of Delftship... thanks for the tip.

Re: Hull reconstruction - workflow
A little update..
I created some cloud points sections with Rhino, and then I lofted part of the hull.
Comparing the point cloud and the mesh with cloud compare says things are quite fine.
Have to try to combine it and Delftship
Thanks again,
Massimo

From Massimo:
Any further thoughts from forum members about Delftship software and other workflows for hull reconstruction: scanning>modeling?
