Hi
The Zamani research group in the Geomatics Division at the University of Cape Town, in Partnership with UNESCO Jordan, has completed the third phase of the fieldwork for the documentation of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Petra in Jordan. The documentation covers the tombs, temples, the Siq canyon and the landscape over an a length of 2.9 km in Wadi Musa and 400 m in Wadi Farasa.

Brilliant work guys!

12 Billion points scanned and 3000 photo's, that's an amazing amount of work!
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Fantastic work, what a dream project. Your polygonal models are very clean, I was wondering what your process and software used to get to your final deliverables. Did you convert your point cloud to polys and retopo in a 3d software? Looking at the video you can tell some interesting parts of the structure are buried, It would be cool to incorporate some seismographic scans in as well. Maybe someday.

The scans are cleaned in Cyclone / Z+F software and Surfaces are extracted using Volumetric Merging / point-set based methods.

Here is another part of Petra that shows buried tombs.
