I have a job at the moment where I have scanned a scene some days after the crash then scanned the vehicle involved. Can I import the scanned vehicle into the scene. I have the location of the car documented by way of a total station which I have imported into the scanned scene. I am currently using Riscan PRo 1.4.3.

Pat,
If you take your scans into Pointools, you can introduce another scan.
Placing the newly introduced vehicle/object can be a bit of a challenge, but it can be done.
hope this helps,
David

Re: Placing cars in a scene
Hi Pat,
My post in this forum http://www.laserscanning.org.uk/forum/v ... 116&t=4213 was about doing this. Unfortunately I am yet to reach a fully satisfactory conclusion.
The cars I had were scanned with a Faro Focus, registered in Scene, and exported to a Pointools POD; the scene was all in RiScan. I cut out the cars in Pointools but left the road surface beneath them and then imported them as new scan positions in RiScan. I then course registered them together using 4 points: the four corners on the road surface where the car had originally been surveyed as having been and the corisponding 4 point on the road surface beneath the cut out car. I then exported the cars back to pointools and cut out the unwanted road there. Unfortunately as you are working on a plane there are always (no matter how many point you pick) 2 solutions, one being the one you want and the other with the car upside down on the road. You need another point that relates to the roof of the car to force it to fit the right way up. I didn't establish a good way to do this.

Re: Placing cars in a scene
Rich,
You can step through the various solutions that are found by the "find corresponding points" tool in RiScan Pro - there is a button labelled "Next solution" that will find the next-best fit.
Also, adding a fifth point halfway between the two points at the front of the vehicle, and a sixth point halfway between two points on the nearside of the vehicle, prevents there being two solutions - however you have to pick the points accurately.
A better way is to manually pair ("link") the points together, so that it is forced to match them correctly first time.
Going back to the original post - Pat, you say you have surveyed the position of the vehicle in the scene - is this using a point at each corner? Do you have the same information for the vehicle scan that was done away from the scene?
Joe
