Prometheus Film - Laser Scanner

Post by Matt Young »

I don't know if anyone else has noticed the laser scan in the new Prometheus trailer. I really wish I had one of those!

It's at around 1 minute in to the video.

There was a floating scanner (let's say aerial lidar) in Wall-e... does anyone remember that?

'Prometheus' does look rather awesome! Even my wife said so, which is quite something... :)

Some say that Cyra invented the laser scanner, it was actually Ridlel Scott who thought of it.

If you remember the film Aliens, at the begining of the film they rescue Ripley from a drifting space craft, and use a laser scanner to check the ship before entering. I am pretty sure there were no real scanners around at that time.

Also, in the behind the scenes DVD of Alien. When the crew enter the Space Jockey's control room they have a spinning device set up on a tripod -LASER SCANNER !! all 2 seconds of it - but its there, was made 1978 I think?, not to many laser scanners around back then, one would think. But Ridlel Scott must have a way of thinking that always asks "what could this tech do if there were no limits" - and Laser Total Station becomes laser scanner. Maybe he did invent it?? or at least someone in his creative team had the imagination to make this leap

Can't wait to see the Blue Ray discs - making of this movie, alternative endings etc

Call me sad if I always watch the credits for a film, but could not help noticing that PCA did the scanning for this film. I am assuming that they scanned the actors?
