We are a company that undertakes 20-30,000 scans per year and are not finding this new update useful to our workflow, particularly the target based registration and corresponding individual clusters to external references.

We are in the thick of a large project this week and naively decided to use the latest version, and now cannot open the project in the older version of scene.
I know this does you no good now but I learned early on with Faro updates to run a 2nd version (new/updated) and test it separately to avoid this issue. To answer your question, yes you can revert back but I believe you need to email Faro support and go through the process of rolling your software version back to the last version that worked for you. It involves creating a .c2v file from Scene and emailing it to them unless you are able to give them remote access.

I'd suggest running the new update as a trial version and just testing it when you have time. You may find a use for it. When Faro introduced the new interface I couldn't stand it for the first year or so but I have been using it full time now. I'll be giving this new version a try before going full steam with it.

Best of luck to you.

The new registration is just terrible.
Coarse registration works OK but Fine registration is not working.
I find this way of registration very frustrating.
It takes me hours of times that I never experienced with the older versions.

I even registered projects now in Recap!

After running Course Registration, remove any connections you don't want and add the appropriate connections course registration may have missed, Refine New Connections, Optimize Scan Positions, verify the scan, use Inspect Connection to correct any mismatch, Optimize again, then Update Statistics when you are happy with the scan.

Just save often, and if you wanted to run a Fine Registration after, you could skip the adjusting connections part and turn the Fine registration search distance really low.

I hope that helps, for me 2023.1 has saved me so much time registering scans.

Wow, for me with new scene registration I don’t use anymore recap. Try follow the instruction in order and you will find good results.

Helow!  I have the opportunity to write about the SCENE 2023.1 only now. I must say I loved it!  It saved the day (weeks ...). I decided to try it in the middle of a large project (demolition / construction) due to its new registration workflow. This decision proved to be right.

1577 scenes registered !

A lot of things in the SCENE need to be improved, notably in the split view to select targets and the, sometimes very slow, user interface. Some operations take too long and there is very litle processor or memory usage.

The workstation I used: Intel  i9-13900KS; 128 GB DDR 5; 2 x SSD 4TB

A lot of georeferenced control points were used. I took very close care with the problem related by Leandre Robitaille ( https://laserscanningforum.com/forum/vi ... 89&t=21236 ) but it did not occur.

The site was scanned in 3  fases, a lot of changes between each. Some targets were lost. This mini prism and its support (from Koppa Targets)  helped a lot. Thank you Tad!

Sphere from Koppa Targets

Fixed base from Koppa Targets

I hope FARO keeps improving this SCENE version. I will try to make more detailed reports about the things that are slow and I consider must be improved.

Just wanted to share my experience with this version.

Roberto
