B/W targets missing data - I am stumped.

Post by Augusto 3D »

Hi everyone,
I can't seem to understand what we are doing wrong here. We can capture targets within 30 ft. This can be 6"-8" paper or tilt turns as shown below.
Anything further than that, the black areas on the targets are missing (some of it is still missing within the 30ft range). But beyond that, there is no black for the white to create a point.

I thought that by increasing from 1/5 to 1/4 we would have better luck but nothing. (see below).
I read on another thread, that to get more range from the scanner we need to increase the quality setting, so from 2X to 3X or 4X ? (This increased scan times drastically just to capture a target)

I then read of folks capturing targets at 30 meters - basically 90-100 ft at 1/4 (they don't say what quality). Our scanner is a 150 S plus. basically a top-of-the-line gun (before the new ones came out).

I have a S120.
My rule of thumb is:
1X -> max range 30m
2x -> max range 60m
3x -> full range (120m)
With very dark surfaces range decreases.
In Faro targets black area is grey. Maybe the black is too dark and the range decreases even further?

What resolution do you use? What type of targets are you using.

The grey makes sense since FARO is different technology than leica, but support hasn't really recommended that as a solution. Make sense and I am eager to try it.

What targets do you use ?

Aren't these Leica targets smaller than a faro target on an a4 sheet? Maybe that's the cause.

I would reference with spheres and define the center with a corresponding prism setup.

I use a leica checkerboard with faro all the time with my bipod for pk nails. General rule is that the intensity values on them are horrible and you can never scan them with 1/4 setting. You could be 3m away from the checkerboard and detection probably will not work. For me only way to consistently detect them is to do a 1/2 scan and be within 9m of the leica checkerboard.

That is pretty consistent with what I am finding with ALL types if targets. 9 meters / 30 FT. Higher resolution and extra quality. I need to get my hands on the gray/white version of those leica targets.

I wanted to follow up your post with the following question. I wonder if Faro and possible Z&F have this issue and having someting to do with phase based? We had an X7 and even with a BLK we did not have this challenge. I wonder what target Z&F recommend.

I emailed support and as usual not very helpful. Instead, they referred me to the help manual lol.
I am still waiting for a response from them on wether gray is better to order new targets.

I print my own targets using black and white, not grey, on my old laser printer.

I use 1/4 Q1 settings outside typically and pick up good details well over 100'.

I'm using both a X330 and S350 FARO FOCUS scanners.

I have had 36"x48" targets printed on pvc 1/4" thick boards by FEDEX and got good readings over 600' away using full density Q1 settings. Checked my surveyed coordinates within 0.06' which was plenty good for the job at hand.

Are these target you are getting well beyond 100' checkerboards printed on 8.5x11 ?
